Ok this kind of scary.  A friend of my mother's came over my house over the weekend.  My mother told her that i had VSG surgery  and she told me of the daugher of her best friend.  She used to be around 250 pounds she had VSG.  Soon after her surgery she became anoreixic and bulimic.

She will eat and right away go to the bathroom and vomit.  She is now around 105 pounds and looks like death.  The girl said that she never tried to vomit before but after her surgery it became easy to vomit after she had her VSG.   She will  eat then run to the bathroom.  She said that the girl is in therapy and there are another two girls in her therapy group that are also bulimic and they had VSG.

Have you guys every heard of this?

I HATE folks who try ti dissuade others from the surgery with horror stories....  there are horror stories with EVERY surergy and just about EVERY illness...   obesity is an illness, a disease... you cant will it away....  that said,

my cousin had gastric bypass nearly 10 years ago & is bulimic( and also addicted to pain medsd and is an alcoholic) ...  not because of the surgery but because she should've never been cleared to have the surgery in the first place.     But she found a shady doctor willing to accept the $$$.... She never had NUT classes or psych evaluation ( which was MUCH needed due to many things in her life)

my cousin's failures will not deter ME from my goal....

I wouldnt let the stories folks tell you deter you either....  do your OWN research as far as what to expect, failures, side effects, etc and then you will make your own well-informed decision

Eating disorders can develop with any surgery. Not just VSG. After any WLS therapy is important.

I have not hear of this either but I think if you look hard enough you will find many eating disorders in our group that's how we got here in the first place. These girls have just traded one disorder for another. Knowing and understanding these disorders will help all of us avoid them. I am glad this young lady is getting help, but I don't think you have anything to worry about if your not having problems like this now. If you are concerned talk with your WL doctor.

Anorexia, bulimia and compulsive overeating are all faces of eating disorders.  Surgery doesn't cure any of them, and I suppose there are folks who switch from overeating to purging or anorexia.  It's one of the reasons I get the heebie-jeebies when some people talk about chewing up their favorite "forbidden" foods and spitting them out.  I need to stay away from all that.  But I don't think surgery *causes* eating disorders either.

WLS doesn't cause eating disorders, head issues cause eating disorders.

I'm kind of leery of "friend of a friend of a friend" stories anyway, a lot can be left out or misconstrued.

I AGREE WITH YOU EMILY.... I'M CALLIN' BULLSH*T ON THIS ONE. ASK THE LADY WHERE'S THE COUNSELING AND GO SEE FOR YOURSELF. AS STATED, A "HEAD CASE" IS A "HEAD CASE". UNSCRUPULOUS DOCTORS/PSYCHS ARE JUST THAT.

I have never heard of it, but it is a possibility.  I used to be bulimic while in college over 15 years ago. And still think to loose more weight I should resort to these measures, but don't becuase I know that I cannot be that sick again.
