I'm NOT Telling!!!
I haven't read the other replies. And I've written lots of replies about this issue before. I am a HUGE advocate of not hiding your surgery. I don't have time to write out my well thought out answer, but I'll say this:
People are familiar with what a post-WLS diet looks like. They will know that you had some down time. Many will put two and two together. They will speculate amongst themselves, way more than if they knew you had the surgery and it wasn't a secret. It will create some awkwardness amongst your friends and colleagues and you. I've seen it happen IRL and be complained about on these boards.
And
The more weight you lose, the bigger deal people will make about your weight loss. Think hard about how awkward you will feel everytime you are asked about it. You WILL be asked about it because weight loss is something so many people struggle with.
And
Other morbidly obese people will watch you lose weight. If they don't know about your WLS, they will think they should be able to do it without surgery too, if you are.
I didn't broadcast it to the world, but I told people if they asked or if the subject somehow came up (ie, why was I taking time off work). And I have zero regrets.
I would strongly reconsider trying to keep it a secret.

I'm pre-op and have only discussed with immediate family & close.friends, but would do the same if it were any surgery or medical issue, because I'm a private person. If asked about my weight loss, I will respond honestly but do not feel obligated to provide details to anyone other than my family & medical team. It amazes me that people have such bad manners that they would ask in the first place, but many people lack basic social etiquette these days. I get embarrassed for people who have no filter & are that rude, even if they don't mean any harm. I'm thankful my parents taught me better than that!
I honestly had NO clue this would be such a HOT topic!
The reason behind my post is I have a boss that nags about what I eat, drink, that I love ranch dressing & its the fattiest, working out, etc....
So I prefer not to share the surgery BEFOREHAND...
Once I return to week (after taking vacation) than if questions are asked i'll answer

I didn't read all of the replies, but there were many times I wished that I hadn't told anyone other than my family. I get so tired of people asking me 'how did you do it'...'how much have you lost?' I didn't keep it a secret and after all is said and done, I'm glad that I didn't hide it. It would have been a constant stream of lies...weigh****chers, atkins, liquid diets,....For me, it was best to just get it out there. The only thing I don't answer is 'how much weight have you lost'. I don't lie, I just say 'a lot'. I don't care whether anyone knows how much I've lost. I don't feel obligated to tell anyone. It's not a lie to say 'a lot'. I always feel uncomfortable when the idea of surgery comes up, but a lot of times it becomes an opportunity to share my story and help someone else. That makes it worth going through all the questions. Best wishes to you and your new life!
