What helped?

I bought a set of 4 each of ****tail forks and spoons, which make sticking with tiny bites much, much easier. Logging your food is super important, and I find it extra helpful to log before I take the first bite. No "oops! I'll do better tomorrow."
I use my digital kitchen scale several times a day. Often a food will say something like "1/3 cup (55grams)". Instead of packing a measuring cup or guesstimating, I pop my dish on the scale, press the on button (so it reads zero with the dish) then add the food until I get to 55 grams. Portion slippage has been one of my downfalls for years - weighing keeps me on track.
Being willing to throw out food. That one is really hard for me, but if I'm eating my tiny portion and Fred decides he's had enough, I'm learning to stop and chuck out the rest of my portion. (I adjust my serving in my myfitnesspal App)
The timer on my phone which lets me know when it's safe to drink. I made the mistake of taking a drink too early ONCE. Sitting here begging (out loud I'm afraid) "Please stay put, please stay put, please stay put" is not a whole lot of fun.
