No one told me I'd feel like this...
Surgery was Thursday (7/19/2012) morning, I wasn't fully conscious until Thursday night between me hitting the pain button and such. I don't remember the recovery room and all I know is I was whining for ice cubes which I couldn't have. My boyfriend (bless him he's wonderful) has been taking great care of me... more so than the nurses at the hospital.
No one mentioned how painful the gas would be! I knew I would be feeling the effects from Insufflation but this pain is ridiculous. Also, I had a Hiatal Hernia repaired while under, so I'm feeling a lot of pain when I breathe deeply. Anyone else experience that? Doc said that should be expected, I just didn't know how much it would hurt.
it's day 2 now And I've had some jello and ice cubes. i can't seem to take too much more than a few ounces at a time.... it took me 40 minutes to eat a jello cup. I had some veggie broth last night and that stayed down. I thankfully haven't vomitted at all, though I have felt close to it.
is anyone else not good with Opiates? They have me on Hydrocodone liquid for pain anagment and it helps a bit but al it really does is make me sleepy and dizzy. I'm thinking of asking the doc to switch me to someting else.
Sorry to be whininh so much on here, I'm finally conscious enough to type so I want to get this all down as it happens. :)

I did okay with my pain management... They had me on delaudid. I agree I wasn't quite prepared for how thirsty and parched I was after surgery and before leak test. The pain meds basically knocked me out and then I would come to to hit the button again. However I got quite itchy from the pain meds so they gave me benedryl and nubane (sp) to deal with that.
Yep I had some pain bubbles from the gas but I was thankful that the system was waking up. Also had a hiatal hernia repaired and yes pain when breathing deep... So did what I could on the incentive spirometer.
We all feel pain differently. And there are different meds so ask about options....
But it will get better.... Hang in there....

You are in my prayers for a quick recovery.
I felt the same way as you did, that someone lied to me about how crappy I would feel. I was released from hospital on day 2, and I couldn't even keep fluids down, nor did I have a BM, both of which should have kept me in for a couple more days. I had to travel 5 hours by car, home, and spent the next two weeks hung over a puke bucket, nothing was staying down. I had lots of back pain and side pain, from lots of vomitting. I am happy to say that IT DOES GET BETTER! The pain will subside, as far as pain meds, there are some pain killers that are not opiate based that you could ask for. In my case, I was on opiates prior to surgery, so they couldn't find anything strong enough to help that wouldn't damage the stomach, so they put me on fentanyl patches, which work great!
If you are not allergic to codeine, you could ask for the liquid version of that, it isn't as strong as the hydrocodone. Tramadal (don't know if spelling is right) is also another one you coudl talk to your doctor about. As well, I found that when I started having pain, and when I drank some water, I would get up and walk down the hallway and back to my bed, it helped get rid of gas, pain and bloating.
One day at a time, and you will see things start to come together.
Take care and keep us updated.
Welcome to the losers bench!

Welcome to the losers bench! I felt the same way after surgery, I woke up in a panic in the recovery room. I had never had any type of surgery or procedure before so I didn't handle it well at first. I woke up thinking "GOD WHAT HAVE I DONE TO MYSELF!" You'll feel a lot better in a few days. The gas was painful for me to, try walking around, laying on your side and stomach (once you are able to tolerate it)
I had my surgery on July 3rd and after about four days I was feeling a lot better. Now I feel pretty much back to normal, just a little soreness still.
Hang in there, the surgery is behind you now:)

I had surgery this past Tuesday and also had a Hiatal Hernia. The gas pain was bad for the first three days but on day four they have been much better. It also hurts when I breath deep because of the hernia. As one other responder stated that walking does help though you may not realize it as you are doing it. I am up to 20 minutes, three times a day. I feel much better today and I have been told by my wife who had the same surgery one month ago that each day brings more improvement. As for the pain meds, I quit taking them on Thursday because I didn't like how they made me feel. Good luck as it will get better.
