Mexico and self pay questions
VSG on 01/08/13
Can anyone tell me about their experience having VSG in Mexico? I am self pay (will be about $16K in CT). I wonder what happens if surgery is done self pay and you have complications (if you self pay in Mexico, or in USA). Does anyone know if insurance will then cover hospitalizations? Did anyone get complication insurance and how do you get it? Did anyone have a bad experience in Mexico? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks
I would love to help you but honestly never thought about that before I had the surgery. Never dawned on me that once back in the states the insurance would not cover if I got complications. I know, I'm an idiot sometimes.
But honestly, it went smooth, for all three of us who went to TJ to get the surgery.
You should probably call your insurance company and ask them that question directly.
good luck,
donna

I agree ... check w/ ur insurance and your local Dr to make sure they will continue to cover you after surgery. My insurance would not cover anything that was from the WLS and my current Dr will continue to care for me as far as physical / blood work but will not do after care for WLS either.
But I didn't have any complications. (self pay / Mx /OCC/ Dr Ortiz)

I don't have any info on the insurance aspect because I ended up switching insurance companies right in the middle and since I had the surgery before the insurance kicked in they would cover anything. But since I had no complications (yet) I haven't had to probe at it. If you want to know my experience in Meico you can read it on my blog. Honestly I had more pain and problems hen I had myy wisdom teeth out than I did having my sleeve. Best $6000 I ever spent. If you want to contact my Dr. let me know and I will pass on his email contact for Omar the patient advocate. Just send me a message. :-)
I am planning on VSG in Mexico next month myself and haven't been able to find out much about this either.. basically I was told that if any follow up blood work is something that might be done anyway whether I was a WLS patient or not then I shouldn't worry about it because they can just say they are running bloodwork for routine check ups. LOL I honestly have no idea if treatment would be covered if I were to have complications down the road.
I would also ask the staff of the surgeon you are using what they usually tell people who have something come up. I don't know who you are planning to use, but Dr. Aceves's staff does a great job of responding to my emails just about immediately, so I have no doubt that they could tell me what I need to do if something was to go wrong.
My advice: make sure that whichever surgeon you are using, if in Mexico, keeps his or her patients in a HOSPITAL, not a clinic or hotel, for postop recovery, and that they have a reputation for visiting their patients frequently during your stay. Between Dr. Aceves and his assistant, Dr. Campos, I got visits from medical doctors about six times a day during my hospital stay, not including the nurse's visits. And the nurses were always easy to find in case I needed anything. I can honestly say I got far superior care in Mexicali compared to what my husband got in Atlanta.
