Is it allowed? Do you do chew it? Do you track it?

Or do you recommend it as another vice to kick?

I should track it but I havent. I didn't chew gum until I was 4 months post op. I don't chew it for long since I tend to get uncomfortable from the air in my tummy.

My dentist has forbidden me from chewing gum any more because I have the jaws of a pitbull apparently. I clench in my sleep so the added workout of chewing gum was creating monstrous jaw muscles. Weird, I know.

I have debated seeing if we can't compromise because my mouth feels substantially fuzzier these days and I don't want brush my teeth every 20 minutes. Maybe I can chew for 5 minutes and then spit...

No reason not to chew as long as it's sugar free.

I have had it less than a handful of times since surgery, but I was never a big gum person to begin with. It hasn't given me gas problems that I can tell. I think this falls into the "everyone is different" category, and the surgeons tend to tell us not to chew it so that we don't find out the hard way that it can cause discomfort. I could be wrong though.

I chew it, not that often though. It does give me the belchies because of the air but just be careful not to swallow it!

Isabelle,
In the preop NUT class we were told that Dr. Bonanni doesn't want us chewing gum.  I think because if you swallow it accidentally, it could harm your new stomach.

Good to know. Thanks, Marie for answering if my surgeon recommends that we not chew it, I will follow his directions. One more vice to kick.
