looking on the NY forum on OH there was a post about anyone who's passed away on here. there was a link to the memorial page, most of which were RNY procedures and dated farther back than 2005/2006. But it made me have to ask, has any of OHers passed on who've had VSG???  (sorry if this sparks sad emotions in anyone) guess it's important to look at every angle of the procedure, the good and the bad. thanks..

I'm sure that's going to be hard to know. If people disappear from here and aren't a staple on the board, no one really notices. Even then, unless the person speaks to others personally, it would be difficult for anyone to find out. I have yet to hear of a VSG death but I've heard of a few DS' and RNY...

I agree with hwag... tough to know.  In my support group though there has not been any significant complication in the folks that have been there over the last 8 months or so.  Now, if they were suffering from a leak and in the hospital then they wouldn't be there anyway, so no idea if that is a good way to know.  Just ask your surgeon what the complciation rate and mortality rate is.  We do have some posters who share their leak stories, but there are very few relative to the number of posters here.  Just do a search on "leak" in the toolbar in the upper right hand or maybe "complications".

Honestly, like the others have said, this would be very difficult to know.

Having said that, why not just do as much research as you can to find the mortality rate for vsg patients? My research from the few months before my surgery on this topic showed a very low mortality rate, much lower than with the other surgeries.

Don't forget those deaths may not have occurred because of anything to do with WLS. We all will go sometime and it may not be as a result of our procedures or as a result of weight or its complications.

I know this sounds crazy but I've actually thought about that before I told my husband where he can find my username and password to OH on our computer at home and that its very important to me that he post that I had passed away, whether it was related to VSG or not. I want my OH family to be aware.

There is only one success--to be able to spend your life in your own way.

A little more then a year ago there was a death of a patient with a mexico surgeon. I have worked in the O.R. and there are surgery related deaths with lots of different types of basic surgeries. This is a serious surgery, we are usually high risk with our obesity issues going into this and the people newly post op eating something that they shouldn't and posting it in here only upsets lots of people because our new stomachs need time to heal properly.

There also was a death of a young lady last year getting a DS I believe after she was warned to stay away from a surgeon. Only his sidekick went ahead with the surgery without her original surgeon since he was known for taking off and moving lots. This girl wanted the surgery so bad, young, vibrant and gave the surgeon the benefit of the doubt and went ahead with it.

When i was doing my initial research on  the surgery I saw some statistic somewhere that mortality rate for VSG is very low due to the procedure itself, but it has higher than average rate of mortality due to other causes (accidents and depression), though it didn't specify accidents OR depression. I was thinking all these people who never left the house before, lost weight and started doing crazy things, so became more accident prone? not sure, I guess be careful out there, you are still mortal, even if skinny!
