It's a before surgery filter.
They place it so no clots go to the brain or lungs

I don't think that's a standard practice.  I think it's just for those at risk / with a history of clots!

Yup, for people with a history or high risk for clots. I was 380, on birth control and smoked for many years and didn't have to have one. My dr did say that one of his patients did die because a clot got through the filter. Other than that I've never heard of any complications FROM it.

Are we twins? If so, which one of us is the evil one? I'm thinking maybe both...

Ohh I'm a "vet" ...yeah! lol. So I'm exactly 1 week out from my filter and 4 days post op from the sleeve.  Now as I understand, there is normally not any "side effects" from the filter. However, I seem to ALWAYS be an exception to the rule...go figure. But I must admit, I did it to myself. I had my filter done Friday morning, "twighlight" sleep more or less. Recovery went fine and then I was released home later that day. The very next day, my family and I went to the beach for my "last" blast weekend. Not only did I sit in beach water all day, but I suddenly decided that at 315+ pounds, I would become a surfer girl. So I jumped on my sons boogie board, and bust my hiney several times! Then I continued to try and walk the beach and tides and was knocked down several times by the waves. The next day I was very sore and the nurse explained that I probably aggravated the situation with the falls (you think??). So while some minor pain was to be expected, I definately aggravated the situation. the end result was that I had cramping from Saturday until the day of my surgery. The night before my surgery, the cramping was so unbearable, bc it felt almost like bad menstrual cramps. And there wasn't anything I could take at that point. So my advice to you: as my grandma would say "sit your tail down and rest" and all should be fine! But just know, if you suddenly get the hankering to become the newest surfer girl, skater girl, or whatever, you will pay for it!!
