Reflux pre & post sleeve
RNY on 10/26/12
I have not had my surgery yet, but I have GERD and the acid reflux was a major concern. My doc said that as long as I have it under control with medicine, I should be fine. Then today when I met with my NUT again, he said that taking my medicine once I get to regular foods would be fine. He also suggests a probiotic like Colon Health to help as well.

Thanks for all the input.
I don't want to have R-NY instead, and I understand that if there is an ongoing problem or ulcers develop, the revision option is to R-NY.
I have always had some acid issues, but controlled with prilosec and now nexium.
I'm going for an upper GI tomorrow, so hopefully they can determine if there is anything more going on. It was also mentioned that it could be a hiatal hernia, which is treated at the time of surgery. So hopefully, it won't prevent me from the sleeve.

I only had reflux post-op at my higher weight of 351 after I lost some it went away. Than it came back after surgery of course. They put me on a PPI for about 3 months and said after that I shouldn't need it. I did but I tried to stop again no more reflux. I think for most people your body will adjust. My Doc did say I'd probably have is post op but he was wrong because I'm doing just fine now. After awhile I guess your stomach stops making the excess acid and you don't need the PPI's. I was scared about taking them long term but I would have if I needed them.
Also, make sure they check for a hiatal hernia which is a very common occurrence.
I never had reflux pre-op, even pre-band, had the occasional "heartburn" from overeating, but what fatty didn't get it after shoveling in 3000 calories of Mexican food.
Post-VSG, developed reflux, 3 years out still pop a Nexium every morning with zero issues.

I went through this, but was fortunate - it turned out I had a fairly sizeable hiatal hernia, so my surgeon felt that was the likely cause of reflux for me, and I'd be ok with the sleeve once they fixed the HH. So far so good, at 14 months post-op I'm trying to wean myself off reflux meds and it's going well.
When I was doing my initial research and consults I did talk with another surgeon who's had sleeve patients with extreme, persistent reflux post-op, and they're VERY difficult to treat.
Frankly, though I preferred the sleeve for several reasons, I would much rather have had RNY than no surgery! All the options have their pros and cons. You'll be in a much better position to make a decision once they've checked your esophageal passageway. If you have severe scarring, VSG just may not be worth the risk. I lost my mother a couple of years ago to esophageal cancer that probably developed from scarring from reflux.
