question about follow up after Mexico
First off, hello to a fellow NY'er!!!! My family doctor that I have been seeing for over 7 years is doing all my before and after care from surgery. He's great and has been helping me with getting this process completed since I started seeing him. He's been there for a divorce and just take the best care of me that I could ever ask for so when I asked him if he would do all my pre and post surgery following, he was insulted that I would even have to ask...Since the surgery all my levels are great and I haven't been on any of my meds since a week before surgery and that almost months ago...
I hope you find someone that takes a good care of you as mine has...

Speak to your dr and see what information from your surgeon that they will want. My dr said of course he would follow up my care post op but then he left the province lol. so the new dr wanted a surgery report, post op instructions etc... So I had to get all this stuff but basically told him I was fine just the bloodwork had to be checked to make sure my levels were ok. Well I went in around eight months post op feeling fatique and freezing cold all the time so got more bloodwork and my levels of a few things are bad so getting rechecked again in september. All of a sudden I am borderline hypothyroidism, platelets are low which I have done some research and my folic acid was low as well which could be causing the low blood platelets, it could be that I am anemic now. I always bruised easily so probably not new condition. So very important that your dr knows what labs need to be done.
my dr also thinks I should stop losing at 165 but I told him I wanted to get to the low to mid range of the BMI, he said tge BMI scale is wrong, I am large boned 5'9 3/4 135 on me is going to make me look like a skeleton. So I told him 145 is my goal still he said ok 150. I just responded I didn't pay for this surgery to not make my goal. I do know the last time I was 165 I looked a good weight. I am going to look at things again when I get there and may readjust my goal weight. I am 18 pounds away and weight loss is so slow now and maybe my body is telling me I am approaching goal.

In Canada here, so your primary physician should run bloodwork on you just to make sure you are ok with everything. I went in at one month post op just for a check up then 3 months later for the bloodwork, 3 months again which was put off by me with family emergencies so had my bloodwork about 8-9 months out and that is when the problems started, low in some things and being retested next month to check my levels just because I was not absorbing folic acid from my multi vitamins. Extreme fatigue which is probably not surgery related. You can read my post made earlier today about my 11 month post op it explains it all more.
If no problems I don't see why you would need to see a specialist.

My pcp runs all of my bloodwork. I have not seen any kind of specialist since coming home. I just go to my pcp for the bloodwork, and then I send a copy of my results to my surgeon when I get them, or email his aftercare coordinator if I have any concerns about my results or anything else (she's great about responding quickly).
As far as the dr not knowing about the sleeve, that strikes me as strange. The sleeve is fairly new, but not THAT new... however, she really doesn't have to be knowledgable about the sleeve itself to be able to read a lab report, and the surgeon will communicate with you and/or her to say what labs need to be drawn, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Honestly, I follow my surgeon's instructions for my eating plan, and my pcp kinda prods me in the right direction if she thinks there is something else I need to be adding (last week, for example, she got on to me for not trying to eat more veggies lol). Make sure you stay on top of your lab work, because if you are deficient in anything, your labs will reflect it and you can adjust accordingly.
