I think one the perks of doing the sleeve is that you don't have the malabsorbtion issues that you get with the rny. with the sleeve it's less of a period that you're under anesthesia (sp), no dumping issues, keeps the body process the same, out of the hospital quicker, i know you don't loose weight as quickly as with rny, but that might slow down your skin sagging concerns too.
I keep thinking too that people have had stomach cancers for years and have had parts of there stomach removed. So even though RNY is an older weight loss procedure, the same types of surgeries as the sleeve have been performed for much longer than the rny, just not for weight loss purposes. Just some things to think about.
With your skin, i guess it's like what everyone else on here has said. it's about your genetics, and how long you've been overweight for.
Best of luck on your journey!!

Hi there,
Ok, sorry this is so wordy!! All I can do is tell you the reasons why I choose the sleeve vs. RNY. I don't fault anyone for their choice because in the end we all just want to be healthy. These may or may not move you in one direction or another but they have all worked out for me.
1.) With the sleeve, there are not as many mal-absorption issues. Your digestive track is still fully intact. You just have a tiny tummy and your food, vitamins, etc. still go through ALL of your intestines so you still absorb vitamins and minerals from your food and supplements. This was super important to me.
2.) I can take all forms of regular medications. With RNY you are very restricted on what you can take from vitamin supplements to necessary prescriptions. When I have one of those headaches, I just need something to get rid of it. I don't want to be searching around for the only meds I am "allowed" to take. Such is the case with RNY if you want to take care of your pouch responsibly.
3.) In most of the cases of RNY that I know personally, the surgeon did not remove the excess stomach after it had been cut off. There may be a reasonable explanation for that, but I did not want that floating around in there all willy nilly. Sounds silly I know but with my surgeon and the sleeve procedure he removed it. It has had a really awesome after affect too. The lower curvature of your stomach is the part that creates the hunger hormone gherlin (you can google this process). If the excess is not removed, it gets empty and can cause you to feel hungry even right after you have eaten. I find with my sleeve and no excess stomach hanging about that I rarely if ever experience true stomach twitching, sound making "hunger". That may not be true for everyone but certainly is for me.
4.) Some people will tell you that you cannot achieve the same success with sleeve vs. RNY. I started at 262 and as of today I am at 135. Most of that was lost in the first 9 months. I am 21 months out and still maintaining.
These where just the main reasons I settled on the sleeve. As for the skin issue, I don't think either of the the procedures will make a difference there. It is just a risk we all take to get healthy and stay healthy.
Good luck to you and if you have any questions I can help to answer please feel free to let me know. I would not change one thing about my experience. Most people say the only thing they would have changed is to have surgery sooner. I can honestly say that I am glad that I waited and matured before doing this. It is only a tool and 21 months out I am learning that this responsibility is all in my hands to make a lifelong change/loss.

You need to review the pros and cons of both surgeries, preferably with your surgeon. You can, in theory, change your mind as to which one you want all the way up to the time you go under anesthesia for surgery but, as a practical matter, your surgeon is going to allot so much time on his/her calendar for your procedure, along with whatever other procedures are scheduled that day. As a practical matter, that's really not the best way to tackle any serious decision.
Ultimately, you are the one who lives with the consequences of your surgery. You clearly want to have surgery if you have come this far. What does your heart and your head say about the individual surgeries?
