Sams Club, Mango Spears, and Salmonella Poisoning

So back in August right before my school schedule kicked into high gear I got pretty sick.  I totally blamed it on the surgery and medication for a cancer issue, but now pretty strongly suspect that it was Salmonella poisoning.  Sams sent me an email about recalling the mango spears I bought- the ones dated August 23rd.  Seriously- did they think that I bought a box of that and let it sit in the fridge until last week?  Anyway, just today I decided to back track on mfp to see the timing of being sick, and sure enough it was a perfect fit.  Sams is not even carrying the product at this time, and despite being so sick from it I sure hope they bring it back.  It was totally a favorite for me, and I am just not the type to slicke up a mango.

Ok, now the question... anyone ever had salmonella poisoning?  I feel fine now- is it just something that works through your system, or should I run it by a doctor?  Is there long term issues?

Thanks :0)

I got sick from bad clams once, I just let it run its course.  I never went to the doc, but I wasn't,  and am still not sleeved.  I felt fine after it ran its course.  It's been so long you should be fine.  Next time you have an appt. let your doc know but it's been so long, I wouldn't worry about it.

Hi happy teacher,

Since you have recovered you should have no long term side effects.  Here is a link to CDC's page on salmonella:   http://www.cdc.gov/salmonella/general/diagnosis.html

I can give you a little info on why SAMS sent you the letter, even though it was unrealistic that you would still have the product.  Recalls take awhile to happen - first there has to be an illness outbreak that they can identify.  Local health departments then have to report the outbreaks to CDC who conducts and investigation.  If they are lucky, they can identify a common product that has been consumed.  This can be tricky - there have been cases where the wrong product has been identified and that can cause businesses financial hardship or to close.  Once they identify the product, CDC works with the regulatory agency - for meat, poultry and egg products that is USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service, for most other food that is the Food and Drug Administration.  The FDA in this case then worked with the mango producers to do a voluntary recall.  Stores like SAMS and Costco know which customers buy all the different products because the membership card.  They send letters to their members who bought the product.  Sometimes people still have it, sometimes they don't.  They don't know if customers have put product in the freezer, they are just complying with the recall.

Hope you are feeling 100% now!

I had salmonella in June . 2 weeks after my hysterectomy and 3 weeks before my vsg.  Salmonella causes severe diareah, fever and severe head ache .   There is only one way to test for it and that is with a sample .   Funny thing is I got it from SAMs .   My first trip out from hysterectomy.  Don't eat the samples!!!!    I'm am perfectly fine now.  Took special antibiotic for it.
