I changed my mind from getting the lap band to getting the sleeve. I was already approved for the band and everything. It was from doing ALOT of research and figuring out what was best for me. All the wonderful people on Obesity Help really helped me make an informed decision. Good Luck

I had an RNY date back in 2009. Just before the operation I got a call that the doctor needed to have kidney stones removed on the date I was scheduled for my RNY. I took that as a sign. I'm glad I went through all the testing though. My sleep apnea was treated with a mouthpiece and I'm a totally different person. But I took the rescheduling as a sign and didn't reschedule. My fear was lifelong malnutrition from the bypass. I lost 50 lbs and gained 40 lbs back. I ended up getting an acute tear in my meniscus. I thought it was a degenerative condition due to my weight. I looked into the RNY again. There I learned they're now doing the VSG. My doc still wants me to get the RNY because Type II Diabetes runs strong in my family. The endocrinologist said it's not IF, it's WHEN. This Friday I'm telling my doc that I'm choosing the VSG.

My thought on choosing to get the VSG is I am choosing to not have the inevitable knee replacement(s), heart bypass, being on a multitude of meds, *****ing my fingers every day so I know how much insulin to inject into my thigh or belly, etc, etc, etc...

I consider not getting the RNY a blessing. I'm so looking forward to the next chapter of my life via the VSG surgery. I only wi**** was available to me in 2009, because I WOULD have gone through with it then.

If I do get diabetes, it will be many, many years from now, and I think will be dealt with with pills. Exercise is a HUGE factor in controlling your blood sugar. I can't wait to regularly walk and do other exercising - minus the extra 80 lbs I now have to deal with when doing anything. :')

I guess I need to update my info here. I'm having the VSG surgery on 12-6-12. And I better start getting ready!

When I went for my consultation a few years ago i was told by my surgeon that he would do the sleeve on me because I have Chron's. I didn't continue the process because I lost my insurance but once I got it back I went back and he told me he was going to do the RNY because my insurance would not approve it! I called them and they said if they found that if I need it they would cover and they did cover it!

I go in on 12-11-12 (28 Days)

I'm glad you're able to get the sleeve. I really wasn't excited about this move until I got the call last Sunday night. Almost immediately I got excited. But I truly have so much work to do before I get the operation. I barely have time to look at OH or VSG Talk.  I'm going to try to do better, though.

Good luck in your prep.

I too was scheduled for RNY, but after checking out this board and a talk with my surgeon, I changed my mind.  This board is so good.  Just read some of the posts on the RNY forum and then check out VSG's forum.  All I saw was talk about strictures and dumping and pain and complications on the RNY forum.  Then I checked this one and it was almost like the sun came out and everything was bright and postiive.  People post about how great their lives are and how things went so easy and how happy they are that they chose VSG.  I know there are ups and downs to both, but it just seems so much more positive here.  I don't have diabetes or hypertension so maybe the choice is easier for me.  I also like the fact that there is no rerouting my insides, no malabsoption, and no dumping plus other things.   Just seems like a better solution atleast for me.  Hope you find the answers you are looking for.  I'm set for surgery on Dec. 3 and couldn't be happier or more excited.  Good luck

Alice

Never dreamed that I could feel this good about myself again.  Looking forward to many healthy years now.
