post op day 3 no liquids/no home :(
I would also ask for a different nausea medication--they sent me home with Zofran and a patch, in the hospital they were giving me Phenergan...there's more than one if something else doesn't work...being nauseated can't be good for hydration--I know vomiting isn't!
I was in the hospital for 4 days due to nausea after my surgery. I think they tried everything possible on me. Phenergan, zofran, etc.
Finally on the 4th day I kept some shakes and water down and was able to go home. Once at home it was much easier. I think a lot of it was just being in the hospital.
I was able to get in my fluids by taking tiny tiny sips. I know the habit was still there to take a bigger drink than I should but if you take very tiny sips, it will help.
I was lucky in that getting in my fluids wasn't an issue. Protien shakes certainly count, so try to get them in if they are easier than jus****er. For me water with crystal light was easier than plain water or protien shakes. Just keep trying different things, and different ways until you find the way that works for you.
If you are feeling well enough to be on a computer three or four days out of surgery, you are wayyyy up on me already!!
Good luck!
I just had surgery on 12/7, I notice the same sensation if I take too many sips too often. To me if feels like gas moving sharply, I only say that because it is a pain but it moves, so I assume it is gas. I just slow down on the slips and take time in between. My "sample" schedule menu says I should be able to drink an 8oz drink in an hour, I have been doing pretty well with that goal.
Sounds weird but sniff rubbing alcohol if you get nauseous, I wasn't sent home with anything so that is a little trick one of my nurses told me and it seems to help.

It seems every doctor has a different post op requirements.
My surgery was 12/4. I was not allowed to have any liquids (not even ice chips) for 1st 24 hours - until they did the swallow study to check for leaks. After that I was to drink clear liquids - 1 oz every 15 min and walk (hospital floor) every hour. Until I could show that I could follow requirements and be without problems, I was released from the hospital. I was only in the hospital one night. Yesterday was the first day for me to have protein shakes.
Best of luck to you and hope you go home soon. There is nothing better than being home. :-)
