Just curious, how does cereal work? Soups?

Ok, so if we're not supposed to eat and drink at the same time, how does eating soups and cereals work out when we get to that phase?

I know, dumb question, but I'll be haunted by it tonight if I don't have an answer. lol

I wonder the same thing! I would like to see how some of the vets respond. Do you drink the liquid first then eat the solids? LOL Such wonders!

I'd pass on cereals - high carb, low protein, low restriction.

I walk past the cereal aisle entirely, but have found one that I order online that works well for me. It's Hi Lo Maple Pecan cereal, which has 90 calories, 12g protein, 13g carbs (7 are fibre) in a 1/2 cup serving. I sometimes have it for breakfast, but where it really shines is as an afternoon or evening snack - usually nibbled on dry. It has a satisfying crunch and I find it quite filling.

I also like All Bran mixed into yogurt as a breakfast or snack, but it's possible that I'm a bit weird.

So even putting a 1/4 cup in some yogurt to help get things moving you would avoid?

Personally?  Yes.  Not sure how much a 1/4 cup will 'get you moving'.  I just take fiber supplements.

I don't eat cereal, not even in maintenance.  As far as soup is concerned, it really depends on a number of things for me.  If the soup is caloric and needs to last me at least three hours as my main meal, I will drink the liquids first and then eat the rest of the solid content.  If the soup is really light on calories (like my soups all are), then I just eat it straight.  It is only about 60 calories per cup and if I get hungry earlier than the three hours I would just go get more soup.  :)

Ok that all makes sense. I was just wondering as I was cleaning out the cupboard and saw my midgets' cereals sitting there. They like Cheerio's and Raisin Bran and other types like that. (I am soooooo lucky when it comes to their eating habits. lol) It was just a question that popped into my head.

I eat both and haven't had a problem. (although the only cereals I eat are Hi Lo, All Bran, Fibre One and oatmeal) A good, high fibre cereal soaks up the milk and still needs chewing.

One thing I've learned to avoid though is pasta in soup. Even 1-2 pieces sit like rocks, and since it has no food value other than high GI calories I leave it behind. (Spaghetti Factory minestrone soup - yum!)

Most of the time when i have soup it's a homemade chicken or bean soup with enough veggies to almost qualify as stew. I dislike pasta in soup and keep a container of cooked rice in the fridge for my husband to add to his serving. Depending on the thickness of the soup I can comfortably eat from 1/2 to 1 cup of soup and am satisfied until my next meal or planned snack.

Eating soup isn't like eating dense protein, then swigging water (very, very bad - don't go there) It's more like eating really, really wet chicken and veg. Fred loves soup - as do I.

Cereal has zero protein and 100% carbs so I dont eat it. Soup is boring and doesn't keep me full so I pass on it too.
