Just curious, how does cereal work? Soups?

I eat both too. But I recognize that these foods are going to run through me faster than some other things I might eat and so I eat them sparingly. Plus cereal is pretty carby so I eat that even rarer than soup.

I consider that the softer the food, the faster it runs through our stomach but  that doesn't mean that we only eat lean protein and vegetables because they stay in the stomach longer. We need a variety of food and soup, in particular, is a good way to get in a variety in one meal.

Also, I pretty much never had cereal when I was losing. I saved it for maintenance.

I love soup!  Just last night I had my 1/2 cup hot and sour soup at the local Chinese restaurant.  I ate the soup and then had two pieces of BBQ pork appetizer and was done.  Normally we have Vietnamese Pho on Fridays, I always have mine without the noodles, have a couple of spoonfuls of the broth and then I eat the meat.  When it comes to soup I always have a lot left over.

I agree on the no cereal, due to carbs esp in WL phase, but was curious if anyone has tried the new special K high protein cereal???? I would think in maintenance its ok if you plan it into your carbs for the day.

Soup: I eat the meat and veggies then sip a little liquid. Protein first!

If you mean Special K Satisfaction, I bought some and liked it, but I prefer Hi Lo Maple Pecan, which has more going for it with its 12g protein and 7 of fibre in my 1/2 cup serving. (The Special K has 5g protein, 1.6g fibre in 1/2 cup)

I also really like Fibre One and All Bran. With 14g of fibre in a 100 calorie serving (90 for All Bran) they're really worthwhile to keep around, if only as a yogurt topping. (They're pretty low in protein)

Fibre One and All Bran have the huge advantage of being readily available in stores, whereas Hi Lo is only available (to me) by mail order. I confess that I've been known to eat them with vanilla Pure Protein shake as the "milk", and the rest of the shake heated and mixed with my morning coffee. That way I get 23 grams of protein and 14 grams of fibre for 200 calories. Not a bad trade, really, considering that's almost 1/3 of my protein and over 1/2 of my fibre goal for the day.

I think most cereals are a terrible waste of shelf and stomach space, but I'll continue to keep Hi Lo, Fibre One and All Bran around.

I am good with cereal, but very conditionally.  I eat a serving of Fiber One cereal with flax milk as a snack before bed.  It is about a 100 calories (little less actually) and gets in a ton of fiber and iron for me, and keeps the blood sugar level happy over night.  During my weight loss phase, on the other hand, I had a period where I started eating Kashi Go Lean Original.  It met my protein ratio rule (1 gram of protein per 10 calories) and a serving size was very, very generous.  Eventually though, I noticed that it was a weird type of trigger food for me.  I would not over eat on that, but whenever I had a day that it was worked into my plan I always went off plan.  Consequently, I stopped buying it much to the sadness of my girls.  I find it a little weird that my Fiber One days I am almost always on plan, and it was the opposite for that brand.  Recently I noticed that the school pack size of reduced sugar Fruit Loops is 70 calories and 15% of Iron, so every so often I will eat that as a snack (I am always struggling to get iron in).  This is not something I keep stocked in the house though to make sure I don't have a Fruit Loops party.

Soup is a staple for me.  I rarely do the cream based soups or high carb soups, although I do love them.  Typically I do brothy soups with a lot of veggies and protein.  My next favorite is a crushed lentil (Middle eastern style, not Progresso can soup style).  As long as there is protein in the soup it works for a meal.  If it is a pasta soup, like chicken noodle, I just skip the noodles for the most part if I make it for the family.

Funny, I buy Kashi Go Lean all he time for my daughter, but don't think I've ever even tasted it. After looking at its profile (especially the potassium, which I'm always low in) I may try a serving to see how it sits and if it causes any problems for me.
