I've heard many say that you will know when you are where you want to be. For me, the weight I am shooting for is a guess. I can't remember what I weighed when I last wore my old skating dress. I  still have it, and when it fits again comfortably, I will adjust my goal. There is no way I'd ever wear it to the rink again (it is 32 years old) but I've kept it all these years for "someday," well "someday" will be here soon. I tried it on this weekend, and I'm getting close. All this to say, when you are there, you'll know.

I randomly chose 150#, since I figured I could sit on my hubby's lap at that point. My GP disagreed and said he'd like to see me at 180. My dietitian thought 200 was a reasonable, maintainable goal weight for me. (I've been obese for over 40 years - they factor that in when determining what they think is possible and maintainable)

So - my actual goal? That weight where what I weigh and how I look no longer has any impact on my life - where I'm no longer "the heavy one" in the group picture. I'm pretty sure it's under 200, it's probably under 180. Heck - 150 may be too high.

Goals aside, I figure my weight will stabilise at that point where the amount of exercise I enjoy intersects with the diet I can live with long term. (The same intersection we all eventually land at) I'll know it when I get there.

Body composition testing is how I ended up calling it- either Dexa, hydrostatic weighing or Bodpod. My first goal was just within a normal BMI for my height (155), then reset my goal to sub 25% bodyfat as I still had some fat left in the belly & thighs to go.. got there and have been maintaining in the 136-141 (BMI 21-22) range and am very comfy here and eating well. You have to use your eyes as well, but for many of us- me included I needed some outside source to help as I was still seeing myself bigger.. it's getting better- most days I now see myself as slim, and it helps that I've added some muscle and definition with weight lifting, that really helps not only the metabolism, but the body self-image. Good Luck!
