So I'm wondering has anyone gotten the sleeve who is over or 400 pounds? I'm interested in knowing if it is possible in losing more then 100 pounds with the sleeve weighing the amount i weight.  Are you that person? Is there before after pictures people can share. I know its different for everyone but I cant make up my mind on sleeve or gastric bypass :(

When I began exploring weigh loss surgery I weighed 433 pounds.  I was planning to get the DS because I was afraid wouldn't be able to lose enough weight otherwise.  My doctor asked me to loose 40 pounds during the 3 month pre surgery program required by my insurance because it would make my surgery a little easier and increase the odds of him being able to do it laparoscopicly.  During the three months I lost a little over 35 pounds but felt bad when I went for my follow up to with my doctor to get the final go ahead and send everything to insurance for approval because I hadn't lost all 40 pounds.  My doctor was really please with my weight loss and said I"d loose the rest while waiting for insurance approval and during the 3 day pre op all liquid diet.  Then he said he hoped I would decide to go with the sleeve instead of the DS.  He felt based on my loss during the three month program.  My age and level of activity that I would be successful with the less drastic sleeve.  So I dumped my plans for the DS and went with the sleeve.  On the morning of my surgery I weighed 401 pounds at the hospital.  I had exceeded the goal of losing 40 pounds before surgery.  The surgery went beautifully.  Now fast forward almost 7 months.  I am so pleased with the sleeve.  I absolutely feel I made the right decision.  I weigh almost 160 pounds less than I did when I started this journey.  I met with my doctor last week and we started talking about a reasonable goal.  He says that he thinks 170 to 175 is very doable.  My rate of loss has slowed a littel, but I think part of that is due to winter weather where I live and not being able to ride my bike as much.  You my notice on my ticker that my goal weight is 200.  That's because I didn't know what to expect but I thought that was a nice round number to shoot for.  I  hope to exceed that and my doctor has every reason to believe that I will.

So now that you know my back ground...to directly answer your question...can you loose more than 100 pounds on the sleeve YES!  You can loose twice that!  Does every one...NO!.  You have to work at it and you have to push yourself.  You must exercise and you must follow the program.  I do cheat on my meals from time to time...YES.  Almost everyone does but you have to focus and keep moving forward.  I lift weights twice a week.  I do cardio 5-6 days a week.  On the days I do weights I also do at least 30 mins on the elliptical.   The other days I do 60 minutes on the elliptical.  When the weather is nice I ride my bike 20 to 25 miles once or twice a week.  I swim a lot in the summer too.  I am not bragging here I am just honestly answering your question and giving you the full picture.

So yes you can loose over 100 pounds with the sleeve but you must be willing to work at it.  There is no surgery that will be successful long term if you don't work at it.  You should be able to see my pre surgery pictures on my profile and pictures taken around Thankgsgiving.

It seems like the more you weigh the more they suggest the VSG actually.

Yes - my starting weight was 528 - lost 30 pounds on Opti and now just over 100 pounds since surgery (surgery was in October). As the other person mentioned, you have to be willing to put in the work - both following the diet and steps as well as getting in the exercise.

i agree with all these posts, it is possible and successful depending on what you put into it.

there is also an over 50 BMI group that has alot of folk there who have had great success and most were in the upper end range of high weight loss.

Absulutely it can be done. My surgeon has lot of experience with over 400 pounders. He recommends the sleeve over all other surgeries for various long term reasons.
