Lab results- question about trends

Hello,

Just got my lab results back (1 year plus a month mark) and noticed that there is a trend of decline in several areas.  Nothing is low, but for a few if it goes even a smidge down it will be considered low.  Anyone else notice this?

Clearly the supplements help, because my iron is now stellar... sodium just barely made the cut and I feel like I constantly eat that (to ward of low blood pressure).  And the crappy part is my cholesterol is still high, so back on meds I go.  Dang it!

I'm watching my own too... the only thing off is my B12 because it seems to always be sky high. I'm now taking just 1 per week to see if that brings it down - not dangerous.

Everything else has been pretty steady. My liver enzymes are down within normal. I did talk to her my doctor about cholesterol and insulin levels because while I've always had decent cholesterol, my insulin was showing pre-diabetes. All are well and she's happy for me to stick to lower carb and lower fat (comparatively to the rest of the US - ha!) because it seems to be working. But yeah, we are watching closely too.

We are keeping very close track, too. My year labs were in December. I was just a tad lower in a couple of areas and I asked about that. My doc was not concerned about the dip in the numbers at all and said everything was still well within normal ranges (except for the mild anemia, which was asymptomatic). She did figure out the anemia with a follow up test. I was just on the low side of normal on copper, so now I take 2 mg of copper each day. Come to find out Centrum is lower in copper than many other multi-vitamins.

I am beginning to believe that since the stomach is responsible for the absorption of some nutrients that VSGers may be prone to some very mild forms of mal absorption. Of course, this is my own theory. I don't have any research to back this up! I'd be curious though. Will have to ask my doc next time I see her.

Karik,

When is your next scheduled labs?  Just wondering if from post 1 year out if it is typical to go 6 months until the next set.

My next scheduled labs are in two weeks. She wants to check mid February to make sure my copper level is up. Then if all is fine we have labs done in June and then at my 2 year out anniversary. AT that point, if all is fine, we are going to go a year until the next set of labs, except for the routine ones they will do again the following June. So it's going to look like this for the rest of my life:

December - the full litany of tests, 12-14 vials of blood drawn and a basket load of tests run

June - basic labs that a "normal person" would get at an annual physical.

Hi,

I live in the middle east and have to do labs at the physician on Monday. They know nothing about post sleeve labs.At almost a year out which labs did they do on all of you?

I know this differs ffrom dr to dr but it is quite difficult for me to figure this out on my own.

Thanks

Here's the list of labs I get, and the values to shoot for (mid means middle of lab value range- some things are fine to shoot for the middle of range, some are not- like D & B12 which tend to have lab ranges set too low to start with!)

This is about 14 vials of blood..

Labs:

CBC

Comprehensive Met panel

Pro time, PT/INR

Iron

TIBC

ferritin

transferrin

Copper

Zinc

vitamin B6 (also do not expose to light)

vitamin B12

PTH (for use with calcium and vitamin D levels, where is calcium coming from)

Lab ranges:

Protein: 7's

Albumin: 4's

Pre-Albumin: 20-30's

Iron:80-100

Ferritin: mid-higher end of range

HGB: 12+

HCT:36+

Vit A 60+

Vit D:  70-90 (higher is fine, and more studies are pointing to higher=better.)

Cal: 9-9.4 PTH: 20-40 (lower is better)

B1: mid to top of range

B6: same

Magnesium: mid, but go by leg cramping too..

Zinc: mid
