Hey all, I am waiting to hear back from my insurance company about approval. My nurse said that it should only take a couple days. As I am sitting here tonight I am wondering what the pre op diet consists of. . . I have all my papers about the phases and all that but none of them really say anything about the pre op phases. So I am reaching out to everyone to find out what they ate and how they were able to keep themselves in check during this time.

Any comments and suggestions are appreciated. And thank you in advance.

Michelle

Hi Michelle,

I am on Day 8 of Pre-op Diet. My surgeon requires that patients are placed on Optifast 3 shakes and 2 bars a day. They taste ok. It is difficult however, I know that the diet will help tremendously with the outcome of the surgery by shrinking the liver.

good Luck to you.

Every doctor is different. Mine requires a 7 day liquid only diet. I've heard some people say they have to do liquids for 2 or 3 or even 4 WEEKS before surgery. For my dr it depends on your bmi. The higher the bmi the longer on liquids.

I had two weeks of BetterMD (wonderslim shakes) 5 a day or you could swap out one for their soup.  And I fiber drink.  This time around we were allowed 2 cups a day of crunchy veggies. Celery, cucumbers, cauliflower or broccoli.  When I got the band no veggies.  Then we could have up to 100 cal a day of several diet drink that are about 5/10 cal ea*****luding SF jello and pocicles.

Good Luck!

BAND REMOVED 9-4-12-fought insurance to get sleeve and won! Sleeved 1/22/13! Five years out and trying to get that last 15 pounds back off.

I had a week of medifast foods. wasn't bad. I had blueberry pancake, brownies, shakes, puddings and chicken soup. I seriously don't think I would have made it with some of the things other people had

My doctor required two weeks of the Atkins Induction diet.  The day before surgery I was able to eat scrambled eggs and bacon for breakfast and then went on clear liquids for the rest of the day.  It really depends on the surgeon.

My doctor requires only 24 hours before surgery to have liquids only and nothing red.

Totally varies by surgeon as you can see!  My surgeon requires (regardless of BMI) a low carb diet for the 4 weeks pre-op - less than 30 carbs a day, basically Atkins.  Then about 36 hours before is "bowel prep" (drinking a bottle of magnesium citrate), after which only liquids, with nothing (even liquids) after midnight the morning of surgery.  My surgeon seems to be one of the most conservative/cautious.  His whole diet plan is on the web - I can send you the link if you'd like.  But getting your surgeons diet plans will be the most helpful probably!
