Pizza Day & The Down Side to Eating Carbs

I never said you were falling off the wagon. Actually what you DID was perfect. You made a choice and it didn't turn out to feel so great.

The only, only thing I am trying to do is give you something ELSE that I see happening in this case. The only, only reason I am pointing this out is to hopefully save you from having to learn something the hard way.

I truly don't give a rat's ass what you eat. You seem to want to be successful, so I'm sharing with you something that I think might help you get there.

That is all. I'm not trying to judge you. But, damn you get defensive fast.

If you don't want my help, block me. It's the easiest way to not have to deal with me.

Honestly, I am not certain you do get my point.  It is not the pizza, it is not even the fact that you chose the pizza, it's about what lies behind your decision to make that choice.  Look, I too really don't mean to step on any toes here.  Eat pizza, eat anything you want to eat for any reason in the world.  My only reason for responding is that I am trained to look for possible issues that you might not see.  I don't know you, you are not right here next to me, so I don't really have all the information I would need.  However, reading your post and than rereading it, I am pretty sure I see something that might and I emphasize MIGHT be worth addressing.  You might not think so now, or even later, but maybe someday it will make more sense, or not.  My desire is to help, not to criticize.

I only view your input as help. I really appreciate your concern and I take it that way.  Perhaps it is my writing style or something but honestly there is nothing more than I made a decision (based on one of your previous posts BTW about fitting things into your plan if you are not going to follow the rules) to eat a piece of pizza. My take away was that just because you can find a way to fit something into your plan doesn't mean you should. I learned a lesson yesterday that I have been paying for all day. I have been starving all day, even after just eating. The pizza triggered carb cravings out the yin/yang. I am not happy about it. This honestly is how I got fat by being hungry right after eating. This has be totally freaked out. But today I have been eating more low carb than usual, eating my normal foods, keeping myself busy. I worked out hard today.

The whole team player was a very small part of my decision. Its not a case of following the guy in front of me off a cliff. I rationalized that if I could fit it into my plan I could eat it, which is probably normally a good rule to follow, but there are some things that will never work if I want this to be a long term thing.

Keith, here is the whole really freaky part; you know how you feel that this caused an immediate reaction in you?  That will not happen in the long run.  You will  be able to eat the pizza, maybe even a few slices of pizza and not feel a thing.  That's when it's scary and that's also partly why so many people regain.  The immediate reaction is only happening now because you mostly eat clean, if/ when you will eat less cleanly, the reaction diminishes significantly but the insulin release still happens and the hunger and cravings for more become the new normal.  I beat the psychology thing over others heads so often because so many of our tools become less effective with time.  It seems unbelievable in the early months, but I know from personal experience that it is true.  The sleeve is really the very last part of my defense system against regain at this point, the behaviors, attitudes and thought patterns that I have developed while losing and maintaining are really the primary thing now.  It used to be that my sleeve did about 80% of the work, now it's more like 30% at most.

Also, it is important for me that you understand that I am rooting for you to succeed in both the weight loss and the maintenance.  I believe that you will do it because you have many characteristics of someone that is successful in the long term.  Sometimes I think that you are awfully stubborn, but it is this same stubbornness that will not let you fail.  :)

So far in my life anything I really put my mind to I am successful at. But a couple things have to happen. I have to test my limits, I have to make mistakes, and I have to catalog those mistakes. I am a pilot, I am a pretty decent cook, I am a computer programmer/architect among other things all because of this learning pattern. I hope you are right. I am stubborn but I also am smart enough to watch and learn from people like you and Frisco. I also like to communicate what I learn because it helps me internalize it. I have always said in order to be a good student you need to learn how to teach. I can't unring the bell on the pizza but I can sure put it out of my head that someday I will be able to eat those things again. I am not afraid of re-gain, I am afraid of forgetting the things I learned on this journey that will ultimately help me to eat healthy and stay active. I read every one if your and Friscos posts as well as a few others because you have been down the road I am on. You know what is around the corner that I am approaching. I value your opinions greatly, please do not think otherwise. You are like the village elders. I spend a good part of my day reading about nutrition and exercise and a good part of my day trying to build my body into a machine that burns fat and builds muscle. Unfortunately I am an experimenter. It's the engineer in me.

Oooh!  When I saw Keith posted my first thought was "Wonder what Elina and Frisco replied"  :)  I think you made a great point Elina, and the whip wasn't too hard.  I never really thought about eating at the same pace or the same things as other people.  Looking back, I see I do.  My best friend had gastric bypass and eats very small amounts but of crappy food.  She orders two appetizers, has a few bites, and I gladly help finish them.  I need to prepare myself for how I will handle those situations after my surgery.  Or when my husband goes for a second helping of something and I automatically do too.  Even out for drinks with friends I can think of times I was happy with what I had but everyone else ordered another round so I did too.

I haven't said "no" much when it comes to food the last several years and I have to be ready to do it firmly.  Today I drank my shake while my Mom's group ate a fantastic brunch but it was easy because they are trusted friends who know I am on a preop diet.  How will it be when I'm with my inlaws or my family at Christmas.  I will spend some time thinking about all this :)

LOL... I dunno. I'm 21 months out and anything bready sits like a rock. Like I said, I just don't bother anymore. Every now and again my little inner child will throw a fit and I'll try it... never a good idea. Maybe I'm lucky? Pizza and breads were always my go-to foods, now... eh.

You made a decision to eat it, now lump it up enlightened.  If you feel poor about that decision, don't decide the same thing next time it's being served.  Yesterday they ordered a ton of pizza pies at my work.  For the last 9 years, I've been deciding to eat pizza tops only and what a friggen delight.  I love cheese and sauce.  I am okay with that but I certainly get what you mean about sugar spikes etc.  I freak myself out about eating the dough.  I probably love the dough more than the toppings but it doesn't agree with my body.  I am the type of gal who likes the inside of the bread more than the outside - dough, all nice and gooey when you chew it.  I used to put butter in the pizza crusts before they thought of stuffing them.

Today I had Subway.  I go through the same routine - scoop & toast the bread first  then I stuff with spinach, cucumbers, olives, pickles, tomatoes, onions, and green peppers.  I then think what a sandgwich!  Well never fail, every single time I have a plan - the back side gets torn off because the front of the bread is always nicer.  I then eat my turkey cheese and veggies peeling the bread off as I eat.  I make sure not to get the bread.  Now why the hell won't I just get a salad?  It's psychological.  I want a sandwich !

When I eat bread, it is of the dark, high fiber and light variety - 90 to 100 cal breads.

No worries, the gross feelings will end.  I totally get ya though.

All Best,

L

Thanks for trying that so I don't have to. :)

I get the "team player" thing, but I'm wondering why you bringing your own food = you being a pita?  It's you who'd have to plan for it, right, so everyone else can just do what they'd do otherwise.

Anyhow, I will keep that in mind.  My kids get pizza more often than they should, and even when it's crappy Little Caesar's it smells really good (not that I eat it, but I wish I could).  I will remember this post in the future!!  Maybe I won't wish I could eat it!
