Pizza Day & The Down Side to Eating Carbs

In most cases me bringing my food would never be an issue. This was about making the team feel appreciated for their efforts. If I had brought my own food it would have become the topic of conversation and while I don't specifically have an issue talking about it nor my surgery (I speak about it at length and everyone is fascinated by it), I wanted our conversation to be about the great job we did.

Hopefully everyone in here doesn't make this about me making a bad decision or wanting to eat pizza. I made the decision to eat the pizza AND I planned my meal day around it. This post is about the end result which was significantly increased hunger and why I believe I had/have increased hunger. It is a warning to everyone about what happens when you eat a large concentration of carbs. That slice of pizza had about 28 carbs in it and while I am only at 34 for the whole day, eat 28 together of junky white bread carbs instead of over the course of the day and in the form of slow digesting vegetable, nut, or seed carbs.

This was all about sharing experience with a little bit of analysis. I am not looking for anyone to tell me it is ok to eat pizza. Its sad because I love pizza and it would be nice to once in a while have a few bites, but that is just not going to work out for me.

For what it is worth I totally get the work situation thing.  Once a month we have an award lunch for our students that show exemplary citizenship, and pizza and crap is the name of the day.  Initially I would just eat lunch before that lunch, but the principal was becoming concerned due to the weight loss and cancer.  So then I tried to just eat the few veggies that were brought in, still a topic of conversation.  I happen to detest pizza 90% of the time so it has no pull for me- but all of the sugary treats are my demon for sure there.  At this point, I have been doing it so long that it finally became nothing much to talk about, except that the students notice I am not eating and ask about it occasionally.  Now I just show up with a protein shake and eat the veggies and once in a while a small treat.  Anyway, about the team player thing- I get it.  It is not like I can just skip these lunches, and in the first 6 months post op it was a painful lunch that I dreaded going to.  I didn't eat pizza, but I totally would have avoided the situation completely if possible.

No on a different in-service day I was ill- prepared and ate the dang pizza.  And I am not a pizza fan.  One of the only times I got sick.  Pizza would do that to me before surgery too- something about that nasty greasy toppings that doesn't usually sit well with me.

Have you ever taken a paper towel to soak up all that grease before you eat it?  Geezus that is nasty!

I guess thats whats making me defensive. I wasn't ill-prepared, I made a plan that included the piece of pizza. Even though it fit into my plan it was still a bad idea.

I agree on the pepperoni/cheese grease.

I've found that carbs like that boost my hunger a lot. I love carbs, who doesn't, but they aren't worth it.
It'll take a day or so to get back to fat burning but that's ok.
You also may be needing more protein at this time. Even though you feel full, you may need the protein.
I would've done the same thing you did. Sometimes it can't be avoided without a lot of trouble on the backside.

Pizza sits like a rock. I don't even bother. If it's a topic I don't want to discuss, I just say that I'm gluten sensitive and leave it like that and eat the toppings. If they push, I just say "yeah, I have a lot of weird food issues and allergies and I get bored talking about it... oh, did you hear the news story this morning about...."

Exactly! I love pizza, but if we're talking almost all commercial pizza the only part I'll put in my mouth is the yummy topping. If at a group event I take my slice or 2, nibble on the toppings and maybe a bite of the crispy edge, then I'm comfortably full and done.

In real life I find my eating style gets about as much attention as I invite. If I eat just the part I like while enjoying the company nobody CARES. If someone comments I just say the bread bugs my stomach, but isn't the "whatever" great?

Hey Keith! Can I go out on a limb here and call bull**** about the team player thing? Nicely though and with all the sympathy in the world for you. Its not really about the team or even drawing attention, for me. If it were me making that pizza decision, I would have rationalized it like that too and planned for it and low carbed it for the day before and after and in the end it still would have not been about the team thing...but just about wanting a slice of pizza and seizing the opportunity and a good justification being handy...in the name of the team. Noble reason. I totally am saying that this would have been me so I am giving you the benefit of the doubt. Your thought process is yours and yours alone. I would have done the same as you (eating the pizza). I hope I never have this opportunity though! And would have felt as crappy after. Thanks for sharing and being brave!

The point of my post was not about the decision to eat the pizza. I made that decision and planned for it. The post was about the after effect of eating the pizza and the hunger while being full.
