Women in their late 30's early 40's with VSG
I have been struggling to decide between VSG and RNY for some time now. I am almost positive I want the VSG but am concerned about being successful. I am 39 and my metabolism has reallllly slowed down over the past few years and my hormones seem a bit out of whack. Is there anyone out there that had VSG in their late 30's or early 40's that can let me know if you found it difficult to lose weight due to age/metabolism/hormone issues? I would love to hear from women that had it later in life and how your journey was. Any tips? Thanks so much!
I had this surgery when I was 38 years old. Take a look on my profile and you will see that I looked much older. That is no longer the truth, as you will also see on my profile. :)
I was a lightweight, at 5'1" and 197 lbs when I started and I am now 105 lbs. This surgery works for most people, but I would ask myself how well I lose on a 1200 calorie restricted diet. If you do not lose on it, that means you would probably do better with the DS, if you lose weight without much problem but have a difficult time keeping it off, than this surgery should do the trick.
I am 44 and lost 150 pounds with no difficulty making it to goal. I track everything on myfitnespal.com and I have a clear hormonal trend over the course of a month. The week going into my period my weight climbs 5 pounds and by the end of menstruation it is back down to the starting point. I completely crave crap food the week going in too. Overall though keeping the weight steady month after month has been pretty easy. Vsg will get you there as well as Rny- stats by my surgeon are very comparable.

I just turned 43 in February, and was sleeved 7/18/12. So far I have lost 115 pounds, and would like to lose another 10. I guess I don't know if it has been any more difficult to lose at my age, but exercise, exercise, exercise, is a MUST. Also, include weight training. It has helped immensely with my weight loss, plus as a bonus, it is good for your bone health! Good luck!!
I'm 43 and had the VSG in October. Since the first part of October I've lost 85 pounds. I haven't found my age to be a negative factor at all. I feel WAY younger now than I have for years! I have gotten in the good habit of exercising and doing strength training 3-4 times a week and I'm sure that's helped. I don't have any hormonal type issues yet though so I can't help you with that. I don't think I would have wanted to lose the weight any faster than I have, since I've averaged a 3-4 pound weight loss every week.
Statistically the VSG and RnY have similar results. I think you are perhaps laboring under a misunderstanding. Yes, RnY has malabsorption. But it is NOT a VSG with malabsorption put on top. They are two very different surgeries with very different mechanisms. VSG removes ghrelin which causes all sorts of metabolic changes that make it very effective even without a malabsorptive component.
Also, don't forget that the calorie malabsorption of RnY fades over time.
Btw, I had mine at the age of 51. I lost over 100% of my excess weight.
