Making your own yogurt- possible to make sugar free lactose free?

Hi,

I am thinking about getting a yogurt maker so I can make my sister lactose free, sugar free yogurt.  She loves yogurt but can't do the lactose and is trying to lose weight.  Anyone here make this with good results?  For me, I am cheap and given the crazy amount of yogurt I buy each week will save money if I use it for less than 2 months.

But, I have kitchen gadget disease too.

Anyway, if you have some experience with this could you share?

You could certainoly make it sugar free but I don't know how you would get the lactose out of it? I am not even sure a product like Lactaid would culture.

You can make raw milk yogurt, that is said to have less lactose in it,but you would have to find a source. It is said that people who are lactose intolerant CAN tolerate the lactose in raw milk and that it is the extreme processing of milk products that changes to lactose and makes it indigestible to some.

People often buy raw milk to feed to their pets and have tried it themselves with good results.

This is all I got for you. good luck.

From what I have read, lactose intolerant people can eat yogurt if it contains the probiotics. I know regular dairy kills me but I can eat yogurt.

I know this is not the answer you are looking for but if she took Lactaid before eating she would be fine. Then you could just make her the sugar free. I can't handle lactose and cannot eat yogurt either but the Lactaid works for me.

Just a thought...hope it helps.

I would agree with this.  I've had the pills and chewables.  Take with first drink/bite of something containing lactose.  Works awesome!

You may need to do some research but I think the process of fermentation when making yogurt turns the lactose into either lactase or lactic acid which makes it easier to digest.

The lactose turns to lactic acid during the fermentation process.  This is why most people who are lactose intolerent can eat yogurt.  I can and I am very lactose intolerant of milk.

She can't eat yogurt that is dairy based.  She can eat soy based yogurt, but cannot find a sugar free option.  I found online somebody who posted a review that mentioned their soy yogurt turned out well, so I am going to go ahead and buy it.  I will save money rapidly just with my family, so worth the gadget.  Out to see if the local meijers carries one, otherwise Amazon here I come.  Thanks everyone!
