How long after surgery did you continue to take the Nexium or any other Antacid?

My surgeon prescribes the one a day PPI for three months for everyone.  I had excess acid issues after surgery so my dose was doubled and I'm still on the twice a day dosage @ 4 1/2 months.  Aceves said that our stomachs have to learn that we don't need as much acid as we did pre-surgery.  Most stomachs figure it out within the three months and some don't.  Mine is a slow learner.  My surgeon said it's just a wait and see.  Most acid issues resolve themselves within a year but some people will always have acid issues... it's one of the complications of the sleeve.

I was told to take Pepcid Complete for 6 weeks but the bottle had 25 days so my doctor told me it was okay to switch over to the calcium and stop the Pepcid since I wasn't having any issues.  At about the 2.5-3 month mark at night I was feeling hungry (I thought) and was not sure if I needed to up my food or if it was stomach acid.  I took some Pepcid for about a week and determined it was acid.  I guess knowing that I decided to stop taking the Pepcid.  It is not really uncomfortable and now I know it is just my stomach talking to me and tell it to go play and be quiet.  It has pretty much stopped now and/or is just not that noticeable.

I was given a perscription of Nexuim as apart of my post-op meds I was instructed to take one perday initially for one month and the on the as need basis. I was given two refills and still have half of the second bottle left. I keep it around but have not taken it in at least 5months. As you get used to your VSG and come I know what, what not and how much your body will take you will need it less. I am not sure if your dosage is a perscription or not or how a perscription vs over the counter dosage differs. But I was pleased with the results of Nexuim when I used it. BTW I found that it worked best if I knew I was going to eat certain foods like Italian red sauces that used to give me dyer heartburn. Now other than an occasional slice of pizza I don't eat red sauce. I've really learned to listen to my body and I over time you will too. Good luck.
