The Three D's- Delay, Distract, and Distance, List of 101 things to do instead of eat

I am sure most, if not all of us, have experienced cravings and eating episodes that we struggle to deal with.  Here are a few strategies that I find very helpful, and in my last support meeting they were summarized by the "three d's".

Delay- Tell yourself you can have it, but 30 minutes later or the next day at lunch or whatever, if at that time it is still an issue.

Distance- keep those triggers far away from you.  For me, this means purging my house of all of them and not purchasing it, and coming up with strategies at work to deal with the onslaught of sugar that is a natural part of a school culture.  (Wow, could I write an editorial on that topic!)

Distract- my personal favorite.  Have things to do in place that you can easily do and distract yourself with.  Maybe for the craftier folks it is a scrapbooking project or something ready to be picked up at a moments notice.  For me a big one was exercise.  Just have a bunch of options and ideas at your fingertips and choose one.  I found it incredibly helpful to have a list similar to this one on my fridge:

Good luck on your journey!

One of the biggest questions (fears) I struggled with as I approached WLS was, "what am I going to do with that big empty space of time in my day that I spend planning, gathering, consuming, or sleeping off food?" My gosh! My days were consumed with it all! It is important for me to deal with idle time as I equate it to "time to eat" as if that is a recreational activity, which it is not. Thanks for the list. One of my best friends is my tea pot, and if I think I need to eat, I remind myself of that 100 oz. liquids I want to log in the book at the end of the day. My other strategy is instead of thinking of how I am going to fill up a whole day is to break the day up into smaller segments of different activities. Thanks for the post.

You know, I never thought of it this way... but you are right.  That is something that use to occupy a great deal of thought and time.  Not so much to alleviate boredom (I work far, far too many hours in a week to ever be bored) but rather how I was going to get my next fix, or what was needed to prepare my next fix, or who can I get to come along with me to get my next fix, etc.  I have so much more time now for healthier things instead like exercising :)

Great, great point and I will use it to remind me why it is so important to maintain!

I have one more D for you - drink!  Often when I crave a snack I will get some peppermint iced tea instead and it fills me up and satisfies my desire for a treat!  (Plus gets my fluids up for the day lol).
