A Food Bingers Epiphany

I've really noticed something interesting lately.  I've been able to stop the "eat when I'm depressed" merry go round.  It's been several months now where I've been pretty faithfully following the very low carb diet.  I have strayed occasionally, but got right back on track.  The one thing I've noticed that I'm really doing well on is the depressed eating.  I would usually "ALWAYS" feed my sadness or blue days.  Now I stop and ask myself, "will this food really make me feel any better?" and the answer is absolutely NO.  I wonder why it took me 50 years to figure this out???  At any rate, just thought I'd mention that and that I have an appointment with a new surgeon on June 10th.  The surgeon who I chose for the surgery, was my husbands gastric bypass surgeon and he was very good--well, he decided to move elsewhere, so I was left hanging in the lurch--wondering if somebody was trying to tell me something?  So I will see this new surgeon and keep an open mind.  My insurance did approve my surgery, which is a very good thing!

If you are in my same boat, the depressed eating syndrome :)  There is hope for you really--just always stop and ask yourself "Is this really going to help me feel better?" and really wait for your answer.  If I can do it, honey--anyone can!!!!!!!

Very good insight. Years ago, I had a therapist tell me to ask myself what I was feeling, before I put something into my mouth. I didn't practice it, until WLS , I always remembered those words.

Excellent advice.  I was an emotional eater before WLS and started asking myself this question "Does it help you reach your goal?"  If the answer was/is no, it doesn't go in my mouth.  With that comes a satisfaction for making the "right" choice...and that satisfaction is much healthier (on many levels) than the emotional eating was.  Thank you for sharing your epiphany.
