Weirdest post op diet ever? Plus, managing the laxative protocol...

VSG on 06/12/13

Home from all of my preop appointments today. My initial post op diet for the first 2 weeks is this:

At least 32 oz of skim milk per day in 1 oz doses + at least 32 oz of clear liquids in the form of water, jello, broth, etc.

I asked, "protein powder?"  The answer was nope, not unless I cannot get the full amount of milk in.

By my calculations, the amount of protein in skim milk is roughly 1gm/oz. So, 32grams of protein per day. It sounds low, but when I go back and read what a lot of you have written, perhaps it is realistic.

I'm totally ok with skim milk. I like it, and I can buy many gallons of milk for the cost of one protein powder canister. But, it still strikes me as weird. Like it's too simple, or something. They said I could flavor it if I wanted. Hmmm. With sf vanilla syrup, I suppose? Would be nice to find some sf chocolate syrup but I think that's off the list, right?

BTW, I can move to protein shakes in week 3.

I cannot believe I have made it to this point. 36 hours to go. All that stands between me and Laurie2.0 is a day of clear liquids, megadoses of laxatives tomorrow night, and a dumptruck full of work I have to get done in the next 24 hours. At the moment, I am trying to figure out how to start the laxative protocol while managing a series of conference calls late in the day tomorrow. I am supposed to start that at 3 and my calls go until 5. I will be working from home which helps, but any/all thoughts welcomed. :)

I met fellow patients at my class this am. Our parting farewell: "I sincerely hope I don't recognize you the next time I see you!" LOL only in WLS land, huh?

I'm not the norm around here, but I can't drink shakes or any kind of powdered protein, so I had absolutely no protein for 3 weeks until I started on mushy food.

I just ate broth, drank water and the odd Popsicle for the first 3 weeks. And I'm still alive to tell the tale! We have plenty of fat reserves initially for our bodies to happily munch on, so staying hydrated is the number 1 priority

Good luck for your op. It will be fine and a distant memory before you know it

Oh and PS...I've never seen anyone on here talk about a laxative protocol. I certainly didn't have to take any beforehand and I'm one of the lucky ones that hasn't had any issues since, but many people do.

I didn't have to do that preop either, but I remember reading from time to time that people have had preop laxative requirements ranging all the way up to colonoscopy-type preps.

The nurse educator said this was "pretty much' like a colonoscopy prep. Good times. I had to do that 5 years ago. That one involved these huge pills sort of like water softener salt.

Maybe it's ok that I'll be cleaned out clear through so we can establish a new baseline and reduce risk of blockage? I dunno. I figure I got off easy on the pre op diet, so if this is the worst that I have to do, I will take it. This involves a crap ton (pun intended) of dulcolax, miralax, and gatorade. Some sort of mad scientist experiment!

Hopefully you're not lactose intolerant - that's a crapload of milk. I was somewhat LI pre op. Am more so now. But if you tolerate it, that will be more pleasant than shakes or the horrible Isopure I drank.

I am curious why some uundergo the bowel prep. I didn't have to. But thinking about it, it would have been nice to have empty bowels post op. My first BM was pure agony.

Good luck with your surgery!
