Crushed Pills

What was the easiest way to take your crushed pills in the days immediately following surgery?? I take a prescription NSAID, meloxicam, for connective tissue disease (lupus), as well as plaquenil. Typically I've heard to take crushed pills with a bite of pudding or applesauce but that won't be an option.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated!

Hubby just crushed his pill and mixed with a shot of water. In the hospital he just sipped on it, which was no fun, but he's able to take the whole shot back now. Tomorrow he gets to mix it with pudding though!

I was prescribed an antacid (Pepcid) following surgery.  It's a small pill (20mg) but, for the first few days after surgery, I crushed the pill and attempted to dissolve it in water and ingest it that way.  Unfortunately, it didn't really dissolve so much as just suspend in the liquid, which meant that I left a good bit of it in the glass.  After a few days, I checked with my surgeon and they said I could just swallow the pills.

I've also been on a substantial pain management regimen for some time that I needed to resume as soon as possible after surgery.  My pain meds are 325mg - too big to swallow - so I had to crush those too.  Sadly, I found that the only effective way to ingest them was to put the crushed powder directly on my tongue and drink it down with water.  As I'm sure you can guess, that tasted like ass and came with all kinds of logistical problems of its own (suffice to say, it never looks good when your assistant walks in and finds your desk and face lightly dusted with white powder).  At my one week follow up, my surgeon's office told me that I can swallow anything that's roughly the size of a pencil eraser or smaller.  So, now, I simply break the pain meds in half and take them with water as per usual.

Not sure if any of that helps but, since I just dealt with the same issue within the last few days, I thought I'd share.

Um, yeah I can only imagine the awkward silence, strange look, and need to explain with your assistant. LOL!!! This could be a great scene in a television sitcom... Thanks for the advice. I'll try not to look like a coke freak in the process! Haha!!!

Cru**** put the powder into a teaspoon and dump it on the back of your tongue, then wa**** down with a few sips of whatever you're allowed. Mixing it with water just spreads the nasty taste throughout your mouth.

why wouldn't putting YOUR crushed/dissolved meds w/ pudding. applesauce or whatever NOT be an option?  Its not like your gonna be eating a cup of applesauce immediately post op with your crushed meds.

I would run this past the perscribing doctor/s.  What do they advise? See if they can switch ya out...maybe even a liquid temporarily.

I know typically cannot crush enteric coated (hard outter candy shell) , SR, XR (slow release/extended release) or ...open time released capsule medicines. Ive read of post VSGrs doin it tho. I dunno if they got the clear from the perscribin doc or not.

Check this list. maybe your meds are listed.

I didn't have problems takin gelcaps or capsules just post op..had to wet my whistle beforehand is all. Didn't get the go-ahead on huge fish oil gelcaps till I was further out (anti-clotting).

I can't stand any pills sittin in my tiny stomach post op. Still can't pretty much always crush em/dissolve em n add to food

I chew em if not too nasty tasting, horse pills like calcium. scrip strength motrin ..a mocajete sittin right by my supp drawer cuz my pill crusher don't work with those.

I got so used to chewin some of my supps ..I chewed on a PROBIOTIC gelcap once. Thee most horrible horrible taste you can imagine. rinsing my mouth nothin I  scrambled in a panic, trying to find sumthin, anything to eat  to get that VILE taste outta my mouth....and even then it lingered...like in the recesses of my jaw  into my ears and brain lmao!   SO BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!

but def....TALK TO YOUR PEOPLE!! THEY need to know, THEY  need to HELP YOU with this one.
