So today I passed out at the Y.
I've never passed out before, ever, so that was fun.
I had a protein shake for breakfast (30g protein/160 calories), then hit a body flow class (like yoga). After that, I felt awesome, and I had time, so I decided to stick around for a trx/spin combo class.
MISTAKE #1: I'd left my water in the car b/c I typically drink it after body flow and didn't think I needed to carry it inside. I didn't get a drink before spin.
MISTAKE #2: I hadn't planned to do 2 classes, so I hadn't brought a snack with me. Apparently, I can't do 2 classes on 160 calories.
Did 30 minutes of spin and felt GREAT. I haven't been to a spin class in a while and could really see the improvement in my conditioning from running. Then we moved on to TRX (with the band things) and I did about 10 min of that. I did get a drink of water during that transition, but probably not enough. After 10 min, I felt kind of dizzy, so I stopped and just rested for a bit, and then I was sitting on the ground and someone was asking if I was ok.
So embarrassing!
The positives: I got to see cute paramedics, my blood pressure was awesome, my blood sugar level was actually fine, and the Y staff got to practice their emergency procedures.
My lesson to you gym warriors: always bring a snack and water, just in case. And maybe don't underestimate how hard you worked in a yoga-type class, even though you feel AWESOME afterwards.
I sent my dietician an email just to see if I need to adjust things for the next few days. I certainly don't want this to happen again!
That feeling of being invincible from exercise can fool us. I'm so gad you're ok, Sarah.

There used to be a guy that worked for OH a few years ago and he was my hero! He had his masters in fitness and exercise or something similar to that. He was fantastic. He actually took time with us to educate us on how to exercise properly and safely. He has since left OH to complete his PhD. He is missed!!!
During the time I was losing he made a suggestion for my exercise routine that creeped me out but in looking back, he was dead on.
Before a mega work out you need carbs. Carbs turn into glycogen and glycogen is stored in muscles and the liver. It gives you that added boost. You could eat the same 160 calories but in carbs instead such as oatmeal and you can go longer and harder. Protein is to be consumed post work out to do muscle repair. The moral to this story is that according to Jeremy, it isn't the quantity but the quality of food for work outs.
You need glycogen to build new muscle. Protein alone won't do it added with exercise, you need carbs. It should not be a candy bar, but quality carbs, complex carbs. It might prevent a repeat of what happened to you.
Sorry that happened to you! I can relate!!!! One time I had been stung by a scorpion and turns out, I am allergic to scorpions. It tooks weeks to recover. I went to a high end place in Scottsdale, AZ to have my hair cut. I was still very weak and dizzy. Before I knew it I was laying on the floor of the salon with my sun dress over my head and Mrs. Spiegel (Spiegel Catalogues sitting on the floor fanning me saying, "Honey, are you okay? Honey!! Wake up!"
Very embarrassing! ;o)
I'm glad you're OK! And I'm thrilled if you were going to pass out, that you had the good sense to NOT do that on the bike! Can you even imagine? Good advice btw - hydrate and bring a snack. Burning off more calories than you've consumed in total is probably a recipe for blacking out, eh? So glad you're OK.

Nooooooo, burning more calories than we consume is exactly how we lose weight.
This scares me, because like yesterday I ate breakfast and then went swimming and by 1:30 I was dizzy after swimming and had to buy 2 banannas at the store and got home and engorged myself with dinner. I get dizzy a lot just not eating for a few hours. Food in not a huge priority for me all the time until I get dizzy then I over induldge thats one of my biggest problems with weight gain is skipping meals then eating a ton.
