Protein shake allergy?

I mentioned in a previous post that I have experienced a fuzzy feeling in my throat after certain protein shakes.  Well today my throat actually began to swell after a RTD Premiere Protein shake.  I was never in any danger but obviously I stopped drinking the shake.  Most concerning is that I had no problem with this shake two days ago.  I am trying Isopure today but I think I am going to pick up an antihistamine to have on hand while I work my way through different products.

I have done several OH searches for allergies to protein shakes or whey etc but most of the posts are from 3-4 years ago.  (I did find a recipe for protein shakes with greek yogurt and milk, definitely going to try that!)  My question is, has anyone or is anyone else going through this and have you found an option that does not cause these symptoms for you?

I have never had any problems with Atkins or Special K shakes but neither has near enough protein and SK has way too much sugar.  I am still preop but am hoping to figure this out before surgery.  I have a Syntrax sample pack and a Nectar sample pack to work through.

Thanks!

Whey protein is made from milk, so if you're not allergic to milk, it's probably not the protein but one of the flavors or colors they add.  Have you tried plain whey protein powder?  I think keeping anti-histamine on hand while you figure this out is very smart.

Thanks for the reply.  I think you are probably correct.  I have never been a milk drinker, but have never had a problem with dairy (although I know that might change). I am trying a Pure Protein banana cream shake today.  So far no problem.  I also picked up a protein shake recipe book so I can try the plain whey powder you recommend.

I am the same way. I am nearly 6 weeks post op and most protein shakes make my throat tingle and feel itchy and start to swell. Of coarse the massive panick attack that follows is not helping. The only one that i can do is click. But i still get what feels like an allergy attack with sneezing and stuffy nose after drinking it. Greek yogurt is a life saver for me. i cant do milk since surgery. Ask your dr, maybe he will be more helpful then mine was. Remember protien shakes will not be forever just till you are healed enough to get your protien from food again. I love reading the "whatcha eatin today" post most of them no longer do shakes.

I will order some Click and see how it goes.  I have my surgery orientation on Wednesday and the nutritionist is supposed to be there.  I'll report an update afterward.  Thanks!

Best of luck to you! Even with protien shake issues the surgery is still so worth it.

For documentation purposes, the shakes I have had no problems with since the incident a few days ago include:

Jay Robb Tropical Dreamsicle with milk (6) (this is the best tasting shake I have ever tried)

Jay Robb Chocolate with milk

Pure Protein Banana Cream (14ish)

Pure Protein Strawberry Cream (14ish)

The similarity between these shakes is the small number of ingredients (number in parentheses).  Premiere Protein has 19ish (natural flavors counted as 1) before you get to the 25 vitamins.  So without a controlled double blinded study this is how I am moving forward.  I also like that Jay Robb shakes are colored with things like beta carotene and beets.

Also tried Isopure Apple Melon (9ish) and other than needing to drink water to clear the thickness of my saliva after drinking it, all is well.

This is just what has worked for me so far.

broken heart (sadly I don't see those little glasses filled with beer anymore.....now they are filled with a freshly shaken foamy protein shake....sigh)
