Sleeve or Duodenal Switch?

Lizanne's post is excellent! I have seen a few sleevers revise to duodenal switch here. I also suggest posting this question on the DS board. I think the DS is great. I considered it strongly. However, I decided against it for many of the same reasons that Lizanne did. I was a somewhat low BMI and not particularly good at taking a lot of pills every day. Some of the side effects I wasn't fond of.  I considered the DS a bit stronger for a time because of my type 2 diabetes. Fortunately, the VSG was enough for me to get my blood sugar to a normal level now but I still eat like a diabetic which is basically the same thing as a sleever eats anyway so it worked out great. I will say if my BMI had been close to 50 I probably would have gotten the DS because of my diabetes in combination with more weight needed to lose and keep off. However, there are some sleevers who have started at over 50 BMI and gotten to their goals. So it can be done.

I strongly agree with Lizanne to try and decide on the DS or VSG upfront because the DS does seem to work out better when done all at once.

I lost 150+ no problem with the sleeve.  I know that seems like a ton of weight, but it is totally doable with the sleeve.  Don't get me wrong, the DS is a great option.  I just knew that all that supplementing would be a problem for me.

Congrats on your weight loss! If you don't mind my asking, what was your BMI or weight starting out and has it been difficult to maintain your weight?
Are there any specific strategies you use?

My starting BMI was 60+ and is now 24-25, at the top of my range. I have about 10-15 pounds of skin according to the plastics dude. I started at 375 and got to 150. I'm at 157 today because I made some bad choices the past couple of weeks, but I know it will come right back off.

Any surgery will work for you if you are committed to it. I'm very committed, obviously. I lost 225 pounds! I have my good and bad days, of course, but I wouldn't change it for anything in the world. I didn't want the cons that come with the DS, but I knew if I somehow didn't make it, it was an option.

You have to do your research and decide what's best for you. Everyone is different and every surgery is different. I'm very pleased with my choice. :)
