OT: Is that a giant brussel sprout?

So I had plastic surgery 2 weeks ago and still have drains, soreness, etc.  My family is coming to my home today for Christmas dinner.  Normally my eldest daughter would take over, because she loves to prepare a large family meal like this- but she had to work at her theater job until 4.  This means my youngest daughter, age 14, is stepping up along with my 20 year old son who cooks minimally.  We have been on a total brussel sprout kick in our house now since Thanksgiving (especially the youngest daughter).... I know, this is wandering but stay with me!  Anyway, I just heard my daughter ask my husband, "Is that a giant brussel sprout? That is so cool I can't wait to eat it!"  Yea, is was a cabbage.  Cracks me up.

Hope you guys have a Merry Christmas!

Awesome story! Usually it's the sprouts that are called mini cabbages!

How many are you having for dinner? What is on your menu?

Ours is:
steak
cedar planked salmon
fresh green beans
corn
mashed potatoes
mac and cheese
pretzel rolls
mini apple pie a la mode
fresh pineapple

Given the weirdness of our respective individual diets, this will give us each something to enjoy. I will have both meats + veg and maybe some pineapple later in the evening for dessert. Hubby (no red meat, whole foods) will have fish + all sides except mac and cheese. Son will have steak + all sides except beans because he doesn't eat anything green. My vegetarian daughter will have all sides.

I am pretty pleased with how meal planning and cooking has turned out for us in general. Having all of the variety actually has strengthened my resolve to live around/be smart about the stuff that isn't as good for me. The family tradition is cinnamon rolls on Christmas morning. The kids had them this morning. I was able to smell them cooking and think they smelled lovely, but it didn't bother me. Shows me how far I've come.

Merry Christmas to you!

Laurie

I have a 14 year old in charge of the menu, so they are all easy, straight forward recipes.  She is also a vegetarian, but makes an entire meal out of the brussel sprout dish- she is just in love with them!

Ham, glazed with pineapple slices, cherries, and cloves holding them in place- a total throw back to how my mom made the ham decades ago

brussel sprouts and carrots carmelized with plenty of garlic, salt, and pepper

sweet potatoe casseroleish type dish

scalloped potatoes, assuming my sister actually brings them ;0)

Kale salad

veggie tray

white trash jello (lovingly named so, cottage cheese, crushed pinapple, cool whip, and jello)

guacamole, salsa, chips.... parmesean chips and hummus

fresh fruit and a chocolate fountain

apple, pumpkin, pecan pie

cheesecake

And for the record, up until last night the pies were not on the menu in an attempt to manage the sugar level.  The hubby woke up this morning and made them.

Oh, only 12 for dinner tonight.  It can get crazy when I have both sides due to the numbers, so taking it easy this year and went to the hubby's side last night.

Lots of great choices in there! Enjoy your company and your feast.
For the record, I was thinking about roasted brussels sprouts but couldn't find any fresh ones at the store that looked good, so green beans it is. But now you have me thinking about them...yum yum yum!

I love how brussels sprouts are now the hot veggie! I remember growing up- hating the little mushy sulfur bombs.. then when I got older, and realized my mom couldn't cook :) I found I actually love them.

Today it's just hubby & I. We postponed Xmas with my parents till Sunday as I'm getting over my third upper respiratory issue since October (not happy about that!) and I don't want to bring the ick to them as they aren't in the best health..

Today's menu:

Coffee, eggnog (hey, we DID have coffee first kiss )

eggs over easy, haggis, savory mushrooms

butter poached lobster tails & spinach cheddar souffle

reworked cheesecake (got a fab cheesecake from work, but waaaay too sweet, like sick-sweet.. so, I'm re-making it, it's an experiment. I made one big springform, and one 4oz ramekin- the ramekin for dessert tonight, and as a test.

Sunday holiday dinner, mom's making something green and I'm bringing:

cider & bourbon barrel smoked & cured ham

low-carb cheesy skillet "bread"

cauli "mac n cheese"

roasted butternut mash

reduced sugar cheesecake & berries

Fab convo! My mother hated Brussels sprouts so much growing up that I had never had one until Ann made them for me!  Yum. We recently had them at a restaurant in possibly the least healthy but yummy way, basically browned in oil. Oh. My. God. Hey, at least they didn't have cheese on them!

all sounds yum!  SIL is cooking and niece as well so I don't know anything besides roast beef. Have had a lovely time eating things like Brie, chocolate bark, and a wide variety of cookies!  What the hell. That's me, the food rebel. Ah well!
