Post op people- how many calories?
Hey, I was just wondering if all you post- op VSG'ers could share how many calories you eat per day? I am having a hard time wrapping my mind around the fact that some people can survive on 800 calories a day, but I know it's true. For those of you that are far out from your WLS, did you ever return to eating the "normal" range of 1200 or so? Just curious. Thanks!
I am 25 days post-op, and I survive on about 750-800 calories a day. I am rarely hungry, and if I am it's only because I didn't eat something substantial (in the beginning I was afraid to eat so i would stick to jello or mashed potatoes which give you no protein). As long as you get your protein in--either through food or protein supplements (you will need both)-- you will have no problem at 800 cals.
I'm a little more than 7 months out and will continue with 800 calories until I drop another 3 lbs. or so. Then I'll add 100 calories a day until I find the point where I can maintain my weight at 130 lbs. No idea where I'll end up. I'm guessing somewhere around 1500-1800 a day (if I continue to exercise 5-6 times per week).
800 calories a day is very doable with no hunger IF you get in 80+ grams of protein a day and keep your carbs reasonably low. For me that had to be about 40 or less per day. If I had more carbs than that, and didn't eat protein first, I would get hungrier.
I am 6 months out, and my calorie target is between 800-1000 daily (per my doctor's instructions). Most days I split the difference and shoot for 900. Some days I am lower than 800, but not too far below, and there are few days that I even approach 1000. I get along and thrive just fine every day on that. My protein goal is a minimum of 80 grams daily (between 80-100g), and I keep my carbs below 50 grams pretty much every day (most days at or around 30 grams). I also drink close to a gallon of water daily--can't stress enough how important getting water in is!
Believe me, hitting 800 calories is easy once you move to full solid foods. Just remember, track your food and be honest with yourself about it. :)
I was right there with you. It seemed inconceivable that 800 calories is enough to keep anyone from either wasting away or going postal.
But I trusted the people here, and got myfitnesspal, and I'm now actually doing between 600-800 calories a day, under 40 carbs, and 80+ of protein a day. I've not felt hungry once since my surgery. Granted I'm only a couple of weeks out, but I have to say I'm actually finding myself having to schedule meals to remember them, and it's just not a "thing" anymore.
It's scary, but trust the process and the people here. Measure everything, follow your doc's plan, and learn all you can. It will work out.
I haven't gone postal once. I'm still working on wasting away :)
This was very helpful, thanks for the input. Sounds like 600 to 800 calories eventually will be the norm but you must always get your protein in. I noticed (as a pre-op) that if I eat protein rich meals, I will eat less throughout the day, probably because the protein is so satisfying. Gotta have my scrambled eggs in the morning, I never did well eating cereal because it only made me hungrier.
