Diabetes questions?

1:  After 3 months, my A1C was 6.5, down from 9.4 just before surgery.  I go in this afternoon to hear what this weeks verdict is.

2:  I quit taking all medications 2 weeks before surgery, when I started my pre-op liquid diet.

3:  I don't have dry skin.

4: I don't have nerve damage from diabetes, only from herniated discs, and by virtue of losing the weight, that has gotten much better.

5: yes

6: The only time I have ever felt shaky since surgery is once, when I forgot to eat lunch.

7:  I do not check my sugar.  At all.  Ever.

I went in with a 50/50 attitude.  Diabetes is on both sides of my family, so in my mind, my weight and diet was only half of the issue.  Even now, with the weight gone, and not eating carbs, I still have it in the back of my mind, that it can come back.  I don't want to be diabetic even more than I don't want to be fat.  That type of thinking is what motivates me to stay on my straight and narrow path.

1.  You'll never be "free" of diabetes.  I think that's a misnomer and wish doctors wouldn't say it.  Once you're diagnosed diabetic there is no "cure".  You'll always be a diabetic but you can be in remission and drug-free.  You start eating white carbs and sugar and - believe me - your blood sugar will be right back up there in the stratosphere.  However, I was off all prescriptions (10mcg Byetta and 2000 mg Metformin) the day I came home from the hospital.  Oh...and my last a1c was 5.1

2.  See answer to #1

3.  No, the dryness of my skin is still there.

4.  Never had nerve damage

5.  Yes, but I don't think diabetes had anything to do with it pre-op

6.  No, I don't suffer from low blood sugar

7.  I don't check it daily anymore at 7 months post-op...but I will do random checks a couple times per month

Hi: Thank you so very much for all your answers. I have learned more on this site, than if I would have read tons of books. I have been approved for VSG surgery, so I’m on my way to the bench.

PS. I have been diabetic for 2 1/2 years, only taking Glimepiride once a day.

 Post-op Questions for diabetes

  1. How long after your VSG surgery were you diabetes free? 2 months
  2. Did you completely stop taking pills or shots for diabetes? yes
  3. If you had dry skin on your legs, arms or any other place did the dryness stop? dryness is gone after I started drinking more fluids
  4. If you had nerve damage from diabetes did it stop or did it get better? My cognitive thinking is better, I use to mix up words, that's all gone now.  I don't get leg and feet cramps anymore.
  5. Did your bedroom life improve? no problem here
  6. Do you ever have low blood sugar and if you do how do you correct it? it did right after surgery, the solution was to take less insulin
  7. Do you still check your blood sugar on a daily bases....I was but now that it is normal, I rarely check it
