My surgeon's office also suggested I try adding PB to my smoothies in stage 2, but, I think it's a trigger food for me... I could literally graze through half a jar in a day if I let myself. DANGEROUS STUFF! When I realized I was starting to slip into that old habit again, grabbing the spoon and heading to the fridge... the PB had to go! It's pretty carby for the amount of protein you get. Cottage cheese is a better choice.
Same with almond butter, coconut butter or cashew butter. I make my own in my Vitamix, and it is To. Die. For. But... even if those choices are "better for you"... they're still very calorie dense and I could potentially do the same thing with them - just graze them down to nothing. I had to throw the almond, coconut and cashew butter out to save my WL.
If you're going to try peanut butter, make sure it's the all-natural kind that only has peanuts and salt in it. Anything with sugar is going to be too high in carbs and will probably trigger you. The fact that you're on here asking us if you can eat it is an indication that it might be a trigger for you.
(Tangent warning) You know what the best peanut butter is? The stuff where you buy (or grow) your peanuts, roast them in the oven, and grind them without salt. Oh. Mah. Gaaawwwd. *dies*
Yeeeahhh. PB is a trigger... I won't be doing THAT little cooking exercise, either... I'd start GAINING weight at 4 weeks out.
Thankfully, PB is not a trigger food for me. I eat it sparingly, limiting myself to no more than 1 TBS in a day. I don't generally eat it more than 2-3 times a week. I can tell when my blood sugar drops and I'll eat some peanut butter then. It has enough carbs to raise the blood sugar a bit, and enough protein to keep it from spiking. I tried PB2 and thought it was the nastiest excuse for PB I ever tasted! I'd rather limit myself to a couple tablespoons per week than eat something I can't stand.
