Almost 2 weeks out, on full liquids..how many calories/carbs should I be eating?
Hiya. So I'm almost 2 weeks out and on full liquids until next Friday. The food plan I was given by my NUT was just a four oz protein shake four times per day. And in between shakes if I'm hungry I can have 1-2 oz of either sugar free pudding, greek yogurt or blended soup. I found two protein shake recipes that I like to drink and rotate between. I just barely today figured out the nutrition facts on them. It all adds up to a little less than 500 calories per day and around 40 carbs. Is this too much? I have seen some people keep it under 20 carbs but dang...I have no idea how that is even possible !:p
Yes, those calories are in the ballpark. Some people can only get in 300, others closer to 800. I was around 400 2 weeks out. The more important thing is getting as much fluids as possible. As far as the carbs, it's a learning curve I think. You have to gauge your body's reaction to that low of a level of carbs. I was just wiped doing 20g a day..I felt much better bumping up to 30-40g a day. My energy level popped up to decent levels. One thing that has been a PIA is when my blood sugar drops. I bought a machine thingy and the strips, I've never been pre-diabetic or diabetic, but after surgery I would get all wonky so I bought a machine..and keep my BS no lower than 70. It's gotten into the 50's a few times and is just a really weird spacy kinda scary feeling. I find that if I push water too much in the evening that the fluids (I'm talking like 50oz or more) my BS drops so I've been trying to be more even handed with fluids throughout the day.
Hi congrats on your surgery and your progress so far. I am having surgery next week and had an all day nutritionist + Doctor pre-surgery class yesterday. They discussed carbs + protein and we were given binders with further information. Both the Doctor & nutritionist told us to strive to never eat more than 50g of carbs ever again and to strive for 60-80 protein daily. Calories were never mentioned though on our plans we have to follow a life-long low fat or fat free low carb plan. Hope you feel well and just give yourself time to get adjusted your stomach is so tiny right now about 3 ounces so stuff is hard to get down I imagine. Blessings.

I am about 6 weeks out, and met with my Nutritionist again for my post-op checkin. I asked the same question, how many calories should i get in. She told me that i should not be focused on the calories and strive to get the protein in. She said once I am further along, another few months, then the focus shifts. But getting the protein in right now is huge.
