I know biotin is a major component in any hair skin and nails vitamin and is said to encourage follicle growth, but the general feeling I get from comments and video diaries is its not so effective. However I'm curious how many people started taking biotin before they noticed hair thinning? Because so far I'm also under the impression that people started treating the thinning after the fact instead of before... so with regards to that I'm unsure which answer to give. And let me make clear I am no expert on this issue many women claim that their hair didnt start thinning until after four months so maybe I'm just excited I was able to treat a problem I had pre-existing my vsg surgery. But I'm an optimist and I will try prevention so I will take the biotin and continue my nizoral treatments and I guess we shall see how that goes by the end of four months.

If you take a bariatric multivitamin, biotin is usually one of the ingredients.

For itchy scalp, I like Avlon KeraCare Dry and Itchy Scalp Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner. Each is about $12 for 8 ounces. It's different because you shampoo your hair and leave it on your hair for about 5 minutes (the shampoo lather). Then you rinse and apply the conditioner and leave it on for 5 minutes. It takes the itch completely away and leaves my hair shiny. You can get it on drugstore dot com.

I started losing my hair at almost exactly month 4. I had short hair to begin with and a lot of it. I just had my hair cut super-short. I always wanted really short blonde hair. I could see the "baby hair" - the soft, fuzzy chia pet kind the other poster mentioned! - at my hairline almost immediately after I started really noticing fallout.

I didn't panic because I really didn't care. I was getting skinny! I was so deliriously happy I was losing weight that nothing could dampen my happiness.

Best wishes to you!

The coordinator at my hospital said that Journey Hair Balance tends to work well.  That biotin alone isn't the answer.  You need more zinc and selenium.  It's only available through bariatriceating.com and the shipping seemed high, so I haven't ordered it yet.  I got the "hair, skin, and nail" formula at Costco.  I ordered some extra selenium on Amazon to augment it, but the selenium has the weirdest smell and I just can't take it!

My hair loss kicked-in big-time at 4 months, and it started clogging my shower drain, getting stuck in my vacuum, was loaded in my brushes, and was all over my clothes constantly. I took a lot of vitamins and biotin before surgery, and it didn't help whatsoever. I was told by my doctor's office the reason it happens is because of the anesthesia, and that our bodies go through shock from a huge change taking place to our diet and system. I think it's something we just have to live with and get through, and we can do it, and have done it. The biggest thing that has helped me was a nice shorter haircut, which I did at 6 months. It was a hard decision for me to make, but I'm glad I did it, because now I really like it. I'm a little over 6 months post-op now, and I've noticed much less shedding after my haircut.
