I would have thought I would be far more self-conscience given the situation
It is actually pretty common to gain (a lot) through the chemo and radiation process. Some lose weight, but it is far more typical to gain. I am blessed though, as the cancer that was found was non-invasive, hence no chemo or radiation needed. Had I not been BRCA 2 +, it would have just been a lumpectomy procedure, but my family history is horrible and even prior to finding the cancer I had decided on a prophalactic double mastectomy. The only sucky surprise is that I couldn't wait until summer given the cancer, and had to miss work. Didn't bother doing the biopsy option first, since I knew I was heading toward the mastectomy and they could do the pathology from that procedure and spare me the biopsy process. The pain was pretty manageable, but I went back to work 3 days ago and now cannot move my left arm due to fluid pooling up and it just seriously hurting.

Yes, I realized later that it was common to gain weight. I wasn't prepared for all the "oh, didn't we tell you about that?" statements that I got from the doctors and nurses and "helpful" friends. It was a very strange time for me. I am glad that you took charge and did what you needed to do to get well and take control of your health. Heal fast and be proud of all you have accomplished.
