On person I told about my plan to have surgery said that I should consider hypnotherapy before taking such a drastic step.  My initial reaction was to be quite miffed.  I was not asking for their approval of my decision, I was informing them of it.  Based on who said it though I had to pause for a moment so as to not react too strongly.  I thanked them for being concerned about me and said that I have been seeing a multitude of professionals and taking classes for 6 months before making my decision.  I explained that it is surprisingly safe, really effective and from what I have learned it is NOT taking the easy way out.

Not the easy way out at all. Funny how folks think that they have to add their two cents worth, unsolicited...

I know how you feel. My fitness eval person told me that she's surprised that I'm considering surgery due to my size. "you're not that big, I'm surprised that the doctor agreed for you to be a candidate."  Then I replied that I'm 5'7 and weight 241.."really!!" she says...

Yep, have half of my thyroid, on a CPAP and hypertensive....

Think I'll eat with you, where can we meet?

Hi Dawn!

It's a shame that they said that you.   It isn't any of their business, this a very personal decision, and a difficult on at that (at least for me).

My sister responded in a similar fashion.  "isn't that drastic?"  And since my insurance doesn't cover it: "how much is it going to cost."  I told her not any of your business, she tends to be over bearing.  I have always been heavy, and like you lose 10 gain 15, etc.  I did lose 90# once--I weighed 220 at that time-- and kept it off for almost three years, but 2009 was horrible, lost a co-worker, my dog, my father, and my Uncle...I couldn't cope.

Today I am 240 and my sleeve is set for October 16th, because of other medical issues: PCOS, depression/anxiety, insulin resistance, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, and likely diabetes...pending the blood work.

As for the stress at work, try drawing the line, tell your boss that you are only one person.  They probably don't want to have you out for a stretch of time.  My boss wanted my to wait until January, our slow time, and based on how I feel, that isn't happening.  I stood my ground on it.

Your health is the most important thing.  I hope the therapy helps you!

Good Luck!

Hi Alib1976. First, I wish you luck and success during your surgery, and a speedy recovery.

I am so sorry for your losses. I can totally relate to losing and gaining back +some. My mom, dad and I went to WWatchers back in 2006. My mom lost 100 pounds, dad lost 200 and I lost 60. Dad had a heart attack in December 2004 and due to stress and hospital food I gained 60 back plus another 20.

Went to the therapist today and she gave me some things to try (talking to boss to get help) not working more than 45 hours per week if possible, and turning ringer off on phone after hours. We will see how that goes...

Here is what I say based off my conversation my my surgeon:

My doctors have found that this specific type of WLS benefits people with multiple metabolic problems. Then if they ask more I say, The smaller stomach produces less of the hormones and enzymes that my body has difficulty processing. So the outward appearance of a smaller body is a bonus, but not the sole reason my doctors and I have decided that this procedure is vital for my health. If the person doesn't seem to "get it" I'll say something like - this clinic has so much experience with my specific health conditions I love how competent and understanding they are because it a is complicated.

I know just how you feel. I had one of the nurses at the hospital tell me the very same thing the day after I'd had sleeve surgery. I reported her. Believe it.

Wow she was bold to say that, let alone right after you have the surgery!
