If I really want a taste of soda I dilute it with water.  You get the taste and not so much the bubbles.  I agree with Frisco- make sure you have an empty stomach.  I keep learnig that drinking and eating really does not work- there is no room.  Good luck.  Check again with your doctor.

I drink carbonated drinks, maybe 1 a day or every other day, but it's always on an empty stomach, & usually I sip it for over an hour. My dr doesn't have a problem with me drinking carbonated drinks but he did say don't drink it right away, but let some of the fizz out which is why I take so long to drink it. No problems, & I really like it. I drink the no cal Monster drink, or the red bull 0 drink or Pellegrino water with crystal light.

Not sure where the OP's dietician got the info that carbonation will "blow up" in your stomach.  I haven't seen any clinical research that proves that myth.  However, early out from surgery I can vouch for the fact that it will cause discomfort.

I have picked up the diet soda habit again.  Not every day, but now and then.  It sounds better and tastes better than it actually FEELS, if that makes sense.  It tastes great in my mouth but once it hits my stomach - not great.  It doesn't cause pain but it kind of burns.  I have acid issues anyway and should definitely stay away from the stuff because it just makes it worse.  In addition, my internist has said there is very good research linking diet soda to the development of insulin resistance and Type II diabetes.  I don't need to go back there, ya' know?

I had half a glass of champagne last New Year's Eve - totally not worth it.  It made me VERY tipsy.  I tried some again at Thanksgiving and only had a couple swallows before I gave it away.  Just not worth it anymore...

My Dr.'s post op instructions say to wait 6 weeks before trying carbonated beverages. I'm not much for soda, but it's nice to know I don't have to forgo a champagne toast later down the line or not sample a sip of my husband's home brewed beer now and then in the future.

I waited 6 months, and my diet coke addiction has been in full swing ever since.

Hi Amy- I drank 64oz of Diet Dr Pepper a day before surgery.  Going cold turkey before surgery was really had- I went through caffeine withdrawal!

I didn't drink any soda (we call it pop here) for 8 months after surgery and didn't miss it much.  Now I occasionally have a diet soda but I don't want to get addicted.  My son (the smart aleck) always said "it might be DIET pop but it sure hasn't made you lose weight".  And he was right.  Plus it's full of chemicals.

Now if I have diet pop it's usually something like flavored water.  I don't think carbonation stretches your sleeve at all- but I do sip is slowly.

Like you I miss the bubbles too! I loved coke zero and I also love beer! I pretty much drink water and an occasional vitamin water zero. My nephew is getting married New Years Eve and he will have a midnight champagne toast. It's going to bee very hard to pass it up! I miss me some bubbles!!!!
