If this is specific to your support group, I'd be looking seriously at post op followup and instruction from people like the surgeon and dietician and the absence of support services like psych that lead to such a high percentage of patients eating around their surgeries. Those certainly aren't global statistics and makes me wonder if there are opportunities for additional support for those patients.

Sleeved 6/12/13 - 100 pounds lost to get to goal!

Actually, I had never heard of the sleeve until I showed interest in Lap Band.  I found out that none of the doctors perform nor do either of the hospitals in my area allow Lap Band because it doesn't work and too many complications.  I did not want to go as drastic as RNY.  When I researched VSG I knew that was exactly what I need for the amount of weight I have to lose and the lifestyle changes I already made.  I think I made the right choice.

Thanks lo, you sound happy with your choice and have most likely made the right one. I know that the sleeve is the choice for me when comes down to the amount of wight that I want to lose, but I want to be sure that it's right choice dealing with diabetes.

I would double check with your insurance company for 2015, and I would say that no matter what surgery you were thinking about. I would not trust the surgeon's office to know what is and isn't covered with my plan unless they could show me prior authorization from my insurance company in writing.

Plans change and they are sometimes quite specific.

Thanks Rosy, they are now saying that they will cover the sleeve. Therefore, I am looking into that option.

50% chance diabetes will go into remission with the sleeve.  85% with RNY

Yes, the diabetes rate is about 85% compared to 50% remission with the sleeve, and that's what makes it so hard

Read up on that stat. My surgeon told me the difference btwn RNY and sleeve on diabetes remission was 10%. That is notwithstanding other factors specific to your diabetes - how long you have had it, how it is controlled, insulin dependent or not, etc.

mine went into remission three days after my surgery and has not reappeared so far. Hope it never does.

much luck with your choice and post op life.

hey Julia, He did say that it also depended on how long you've had it too. I'm not or ever was on insulin but that doesn't mean that I shouldn't have been. I have a BMI of 9. I've had diabetes for 12 years. My BMI is getting higher.

You mean your A1C is 9? Mine was 7 at its highest before I started taking metformin. And I had diabetes for one year prior to my VSG. If I had an A1C of 9 and was diabetic for 12 years I would have chosen the DS as my WLS of choice. Have you considered this option? 98% resolution of diabetes with the DS and a very powerful WLS.
