I had my surgery Dec. 1,04 and I have not yet reached my goal. I went to the nut. and she said I had my body in starvation mode. She said I was not eating enough. I was only eating 3 to 4 oz of food and I should be eating a cup of food. She said that i should finish all my food even if i needed to go back and eat a little till it is gone even if it takes like an hour.( thought that was grazing but they said not for me) she said that i should just eat all day. the more food i eat the more I will loose. But I am not hungry so I don't eat alot. Has anyone been told this. My starting weight was 298 and now I am at 199 and would like to be around 175or 180. Please everyone give me your imput. My sister had it also and can eat all the time what ever she wants and is still loosing we had the surgery the same time. thanks in advance for your response and have a blessed day

i wouldn't think that eating all the time as much as you wanted would be a good idea...but your body can and will go into starvation mode if you are eating way to few calories. you have to eat less calories than you burn to lose weight but too few and you're in starvation mode after awhile. i'd say up the calorie intake and see how it goes. it seems like i eat a lot throughout the day but when it's all written down my calorie intake isn't that high and i exercise a lot. so if you're working out i'd say you probably do need to increase your calorie intake. just eat more frequent meals. don't stuff yourself all at once...that's a yucky feeling anyway. i know for most of us we have feeding times and eat whether we are hungry or not because we have to...but i'm not an expert. steph

First, congrats on your weight loss. That is fantastic! Next, how much are you exercising? It sounds like you need to increase your metabolism. You will only lose weight if the amount you burn is greater than the amount you eat, and when you get under 200 pounds you burn a lot less each day than you did when you were heavier. There is a great article article in the cardiovascular section of the new exercise and fitness section here that says that walking two continuous miles seven days a week will burn 100 pounds of fat a year and add 60 pounds of muscle. It significantly increases your fat burning ability.

I, personally, eat about 4-5 times/day. That being said, my "meals" are generally something like this: B: either oatmeal or 1 egg w/2 egg whites with some lf cheese mixed in and a piece of multi-grain toast (which I genenrally never finish) or a slice of multi-grain toast alone with a slice of lf cheese. I usually don't have a snack between B&L but if I do it's a small piece of fruit or a few grapes. L: either leftovers from dinner or lean deli-meat with grain crackers and/or some fruit S: fruit or vegetables or string cheese D: some lean protein with a veggie and some brown rice or barilla plus pasta or sometimes I'll have a potato S: fruit and/or a protein shake if my protein is low for the day. My "meals" usually are no more than about 300 calories/sitting, the snacks are usually 100 or so. So, that puts my calorie count for the day anywhere between 1200-1500/day. I'm at goal and this is a good number calorie wise for me to maintain. HTH! Michelle

I can only say I was told at 1 year to eat 1 to 1 1/2 cup of food per meal, 6 meals a day. You have to eat to keep your metabiolism running , especislly breakfast. also EXERCISE

Hey Mojo, As odd as that sounds, it is true. If you are only taking in 600 calories and your metabolic resting rate requires you to intake 1200 calories a day...(your metablic resting rate tells you the calories that you need to intake for everyday survival-meaning the calories that you use to blink your eyes, flinch muscles, breath, sloth skin cells) then if you are only taking in a portion of those needed calories, your body will begin to hoard any food that you take in which stores it as FAT...as it knows it's not receiving enough calories to let go of the calories that it is using just to survive. The body will then take what it needs from your organs and try to store the calories you are taking in so it can survive longer. If you increase your calories, your body will not think it has to STORE everything that enters your mouth and it will release the fat as it is using the calories. It is an odd concept, but very true. You need to find out what your metabolib resting rate is and make sure you are getting that much into your system...and if you are exercising, you need to increase a bit more. Good luck! I only know this through SEVERAL meetings with MANY professionals as I went through something like this myself...and couldn't understand why my body was not loosing more weight despite my eating such small amounts and exercising. FYI: walking 1 mile burns 100 calories, it takes burning 3,500 calories to loose 1 pound of excess body fat...that has also been a HUGE help to me in my modifications. Good luck!!! Laurie

Depending on how many calories you're taking in each day,you could be in starvation mode. I usually eat 6 small meals per day to keep my metabolism going and yes, I can eat 1 - 1.5 Cups of food per meal. Eating everything you want all day wouldn't be the answer for me b/c I still need to go for high protein, high fiber and eat good, solid healthy foods or I feel like crap physicallly. I work out quite a bit too, so I require some good carbs to keep me going. Its all a balancing act and finding the right balance isn't always easy. To make things even harder, everyone is so different! Well, Congratulations on your weightloss so far! Try adding some more calories to your day and see if that helps to jumpstart your weightloss again. Good luck and keep us posted on how things are going! Tracy B 328/150 5'9"
