Vitamin D Dropped Like a Rock
I just got back my lab work, and my vitamin D dropped from 57 in December to 20 now (that's listed as the normal range, by the way). I know we get vitamin D from sunshine, so I don't understand how I could drop so much now that it's actually warmed up in northeastern Washington and we've got lots more sunshine than we have in winter. Does anyone know what can cause drops like that, and more importantly what I can do about it?
Thanks,
Pam
your WLS is the cause. dry form vit d-3 is what you shoulda been taking, but not all docs believe in it. if you got a pth, it's prolly high.
sunshine. you can get a little with daily exposure 15 min on head & shoulders, but your lab result would not put you up around 70 where you want to be,
we don't readily convert misc d sources to d3, the only form the body recognizes.
recent study from our UW (i think) shows the benefit from sun vs risk if cancer is not worth it,
many years ago, i didn'y put my southern folks on vit d all! but that was OH SO WRONG!

P.S. My year + long absence has NOTHING to do with my WLS, or my type of WLS. See my profile.
Thanks for the info. I just called and talked to your staff (very helpful) and ordered some dry vitamin D. I'm not sure about the pth. I'll have to check my paperwork when I get home.
And I don't want anyone to think that I ordered from you just because you're posting on OH - I have ordered from you in the past and had looked to see what you carried but thought I'd post first to see what others had experienced in this area before I did.
Pam
thanks very much! and i'll tell my staff! 2 are new (we're having a vita-baby soon!) and one had only worked 2 days when we left. our "mommy" was put on bed rest sooner than expected!
i've been posting on these boards since 1998, and have NEVER adv myself! i mean i did a paid one once, but i'm hear to learn and share, just like everyone else. sometimes it gets tricky, tho. when someone asks where to buy something and it's one of ny custom formulas.............? lol
pth, intact is what you would see. near the end of report with the oddballs, since it's not part of a panel. vit a, vit d, vit b12/folate & ferritin might be there with it. would be all caps. hurts for me to use shift key. lolol

how expansive? can only do so much with one arm! lol
vit d is fat soluble. the body recognizes only the D3 form, which is cholecalciferol.
the conversion takes place AFTER DIGESTIOH, which occurs in the lower stomach -- in our case, the food doesn't go there! - in the duodenum -- our food doesn't go there either ---. so, not only is vit d food nor digested, it is also not converted into d3.
so, when we eat the right kinds of d foods, we still cannot convert it to d3.
d2 pills or rx D are often in oil, which is of little use to us.
so, if we're serious about getting d on board, we must take it already in the d3 form. those pills should be powder in a capsule. even the 50,000 units is still eensy sized!
we start our proximals and bands on 10,000 (that's 2 5's) and the ditals & DS on 50,000 per day, then adjust with labs.
can you get too much D? a normie MIGHT, it's highly unlikely for one of us. toxic levels are a SUSTAINED level way above "high". new range is 32-100. so last year, my test came back at 107. not WAY too high, and was only that high for maybe 1 month? then 87. dandy.
does any of this maKE Sense?

Does UpCal D have enough Vit D? I put UpCal D in my protein drinks about four times aday. I also take Fosamax D and Calcitriol (Rocaltrol.) My bone scan was not real good 1 1/2 years ago. It will be tested again in Octorber. My Vit D was 20.3 in March. I am to have labs again in Sept.
if you are a proximal AND we don't have current labs, i'd start on the D3-5 (5,000 iu of d3), 2 per day, can be taken with any of your calcium doses, but i'd separate them for better odds for absorption.
if you already know your D, then i might suggest differently.
