Gaining weight - Yikes!

Sounds like gaining is a problem for some of us and I am comitted to figuring this out!  One of the issues I seem to be having is that for the first two years post op, I never was hungry. Now I do get hungry and it is so easy to fall into the old habits. I still don't eat near the amount of food I did pre-op but obviously, it is too much and/or the wrong things because the weight is creeping on me.  I was 355 at time of surgery, down to 190 and now have gone up to 205.  Think the first thing I need to do is go back to the old "write everything down I eat"  thing.   I was wondering for those of you who have had to start paying attention to this issue, is it possible to lose again?  I am starting those old feelings of failure and doom......and I don't like it!  SuzieT

Hey Suzie...welcome to the real world.  Time to step back and start over.  Stop with the carbs and sugar and yep, write it down.  I use Fitday.com and log what I eat and what I do every day.  It is more frustrating now and much more difficult to lose, but we are dedicated to it.   Get serious, turn those feelings of failure and doom into grim determination.  Those feelings are coming from a sense of 'losing control'.  We all have them.  And you know, I seem to be more content when I'm dieting and following a protocol.  It means I'm in control again, and I'm not panicked. This is a great place to come to find others in the same boat. We are all paddling as hard as we can....so join the galley slaves and grab an oar. We can do it.

thanks Charley!  For right now, I am going to drink something instead of eat something, figure out what to take to work tomorrow to eat, and go to bed!  I will start checking in. I think I need some place for support and encouragement right now!  Suzie

Tomorrow...go buy some sugar free popsickles......I've eaten about 3 railroad cars full in the past 5 years....One of my staples.  Keeps from eating lots of times. Good luck...

Hi Suzie, Welcome to the hard part of this lifestyle!!   Yes, it's possible to lose the weight again.   All it takes is a rededication to following the program again...and doing it!! I too have struggled with hunger lately that I never used to.  I have found that if I "de-carb", the feelng of hunger is no longer an issue.  Once I've gone at least 24 hours without sweets or bread, the hunger is gone and its alot easier to stay on program cuz I'm not starving!! Good luck!!!  It's worth the effort to get back under control now! Kathy

OMG I am in the same boat. I have not lost weight in the last year. Instead I have gained 10 lbs. I am not happy with that because I have not reached goal yet. I have become lax in keeping track of my eating.  Yesterday Hubby and I started using Fit Day. We are trying the Plateau Buster diet. I have noticed a pattern in the past year. When I eat carbs I crave more carbs. I am hoping that this is the turn around I need. I would love to get this last 60 lbs. off Sondra

Hi Suzie,

You've gotten a lot of good replies from other posters, all of which I would probably have said myself...So I will just chime with a little support and say you are not alone...   For myself and others I have spoken/posted with, somewhere around the 2 year point the body has pretty much reset itself and you start to feel very normal in all respects, and with normal comes the desire to act like there was never a need for WLS, hence some weight regain...For sure, the key is to get back on program, tracking your food is one of the most useful tools you have... Good Luck, you can make it back to where you were it just takes remembering what brought you here in the first place and re-use of  those skills everyday...  Alesia

Thanks Alesia!  Today I'll work at getting back on track. In many ways it seems different though for me than post surgery......BUT, here I go trying to figure it out!  Thank you all for the encouragement!  SuzieT

Suzie T I have been where you are and then some.  I had my surgery almost 6 yrs ago.  I regained 40 lbs.  January of this year I rededicated myself to the basics.  I was certainly feeling the failure and doom, but once I returned to the good habits I started feeling better physicially and emotionally.  Now I am on the other side, I have lost the regained weight and then some!   Don't loose hope it is possible to turn things around.  Take Care  Terri

I've got to tell you all----I thought it was just me going through this!  I haven't even been to the website in over a year, but I needed to remind myself why I had to have surgery in the first place!  You folks made my day....Let me explain:  I'm about 3 yrs post op and have gone from 287 to 187, however I'm up to 200, so I was freaking out.  I was thinking OMG I've ruined everything I went thru.  I know, I know, it's only 13 lbs., but that's how we got to needing surgery in the first place!  I've been thinking--did I stretch my pouch?  Am I back to where I was pre op?  It's funny how neurotic you can feel about being out of control again!  I am so glad to know that there are other folks dealing with gaining as well.  I needed to know that I am not alone and it's easy to slide back into old habits.  Time to buck up and get serious again!  Thanks for being there when I needed y'all!
