I had WLS in 1/04 and lost 100 pounds. I got pregnant and last year had my daughter. I gained 40 pounds with my pregnancy. I was in great health and almost all the weight went right to my baby. It took almost 7 months to gain the weight. Now one year later, I cannot get the weight off. I am eating like a regular person now and I do not know how to reverse the process. I am back up to 200 pounds!! I am so tired that I do not work out. HELP!!!

RNY on 05/03/04 with
I could have written this post myself!  I had WLS 5/04 and lost 109 pounds going from 254 at the time of surgery to 145 at the time I got pregnant.  I gained 60 pounds while pregnant.  My daughter is now 5 months old and I am still 50 pounds heavier than I was before I got pregnant.  I'm knocking on 200's door again - I still have a hard time believing I am this fat. This is my 2nd child and all I can say is this weight is much harder to get off than it was with the first and twice as depressing because I thought I was finally at a point in my life where this constant struggle with weight was over. I too do not know how to reverse the process.  I've tried everything and all I am doing is getting fatter by the day. I know what you mean about being too tired to work out.  It's a vicious cycle because you know that you need to work out but you don't have the energy to do it.  Did you work out before you got pregnant?  I used to work out very hard but once I was a couple of months along stopped because I had no energy for it then and now it's just so hard start back up again from scratch - BUT I think it has to be done. It's funny you should write this post today because today is the first time in a very long time I have even been back to this website which is my first clue that I'm searching for answers to something that has been bugging me for a while. Let's make today our day to start!  Keep me posted on your progress and please know that you are not alone in this struggle. - Joy

Funny you should mention it is your first time back to the website as it is mine as well. I haven't been here in well over a year or two. I haven't worked out in so long. I think it would be good to start walking at least. Maybe if I do that I can get this kick started and then the momentum will begin and it will be easier. I don't like looking like this.

I had WLS 7/10/02 and lost from 420 down to 220.  I got pregnant 08/04 with my son and gained 25 lbs.  I lost all 25lbs after I had him within a 2 months. I had a tummy tuck 11/05 and after that started gaining... I gained 60lbs in 5 months and got pregnant again and gained another 20lbs.  I had my daughter 4/17/07 and have been unable to lose any of the weight... So, I came across that TIME OUT thing today... and starting tomorrow I am going to give the two week program a shot and see if it can get me back on track. Good luck, Emily Wife to Spikey Momma to Desiree (8), Dj (2) and MarSaide (9 weeks old today)

Time Out is going back to liquids only for a few weeks (or however long you can handle it!) Recommended is Nectar protein from Syntax which is fruit flavored and some of hte best protein i've found!! I put it in a complementing crystal light flavor and its quite palatable. Very low in calories and no sugar and i believe its 23g of protein per serving.  Have several shakes a day (3, 4, 5, whatever) and as much water, cyrstal light etc you can handle (i shoot for 100oz a day). I"m typically a silent observer of this website a religious reader but rarely vocal...however i've been doing TO for about a week and a half and i have lost 18 pounds (i gained 20 and flipped out! lol). Its hard initially and you have to have the mindset, but i have felt wonderful.  You can also do a modified version and have shakes and liquids and a sensible high protein low carb dinner, meat and salad etc.  Good luck :D

Just to reassure you that you are not alone and that pregnancy after RNY for me has also been a struggle.  I had surgery 6/18/02, five years ago just the other day. I was 254 preop and had already had one child. I got pregnant with my second at 9 months post op when I was down to 164lbs.  I went into delivery at 211. Although right after his birth I went down to 181, it took another 2 1/2 years to get and stay at around 174lbs. I had the scarlation procedure done on my stoma twice as the Dr explained that it is common to have your pouch and stoma enlarge some due to the abdominal pressure that obviously occurs with pregnancy.  However the big issue they don't talk about is that your body will do what is necessary for the health of the baby - so the short of it is that hypertrophy of the intestines normally occurs to allow the body to absorb what is needed to ensure a healthy pregnancy. Thats how the regain occurs although thier is a bypassed section.  This also occurs with patients that have had sections of the intestines removed for other health reasons. This thickening and growing in length is the bodies attempt to overcome the malnutrition.  Now having just having my 3rd two weeks ago I am trying to go back to basics.  More education is needed for pregnancy after RNY and the struggles that might occurr as a result. Don't regret my kids one bit but it is hard not to be down about the weight gain. Stay in there.
