protein balls cross post

Someone ask what are protein ball on the nutrition board and this was the responce fron the NUT and here take on them. NOT GOOD  I know a lot of people like them so I though I'd cross post. here is the recipe they used to get the numbers  1 cup of oats...not the quick cook kind 1 cup of peanut butter 1 cup of protein powder 1/2 cup of honey.  may have to add a little more.  Wal-Mart sells s/f honey Post Date: 10/3/07 8:01 pm Not to burst anyone's bubble... A tablespoon of peanut butter has 96 calories 4 gram of protein and 8 grams of fat. The recipe calls for a cup which is 16 tablespoons.  That's 128 g of fat! A Tablespoon of honey has 64 calories, all 17 g of carbohydrate is sugar. Again multiply by 16. (I have never seen SF honey, but I'll take your word for it!) Oats when cooked are 75 calories per 1/2 cup with 3 g protein (not too bad) Not counting the protein powder this recipe has 2700 calories and 67 g protein.  43% of the calories are from fat. This might be something you have "sometimes", but is not a good choice for meeting your day to day protein needs if your goal is to reduce calories and lose weight. regards, Danielle Halewijn, RD,CNSD Director of Nutrition, eNutritionCare.com eNutritionCare.com http://www.enutritioncare.com DISCLAIMER: Any information contained within is meant to be general nutrition advice. I've seen sugar free honey but can't imagine what's in it.  I personally don't eat honey as I can't think of it as anything except "bee spit".  Ick!

I'm so glad you posted this!  When I made them the other day, I calculated the amount of protein versus calories, and it was not even worth it at all to eat them!  So, instead of throwing them out, I only at one at a time and no more than two a day!  I used SF Davinch Caramel Syrup and Stevia to make it sweet and even though it tastes pretty good, I refuse to eat a lot of them at a time and not lose weight no matter HOW great they taste!

NOTHING TASTES AS GOOD AS BEING THIN FEELS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I made them once and I figured out the nutrition stats and I came up with the same conclusion...NOT GOOD FOR ME. I cannot afford to use that many calories on a "snack", others may be able to, but not me.  Besides, I find that I cannot have a healthy relationship with peanut butter, before I know it I am eating it straight out of the jar with a spoon!   Anything that tastes as good as extra chunky peanut butter cannot be good for you!  LOL

I had to jump in...I have always tracked on fitday, so the 1st time I made these little gems I calculated "the damage" to put on my custom foods list...I do make mine with splenda and water to help with getting it all to stick but it probably does not change the stats much, by my calc, based on number I get from a batch... (113 cals, 8 protein by my measure per) Still  I make them and enjoy them as part of my program, they have a pretty good shelf life in the fridge and a couple has about the same cals and protein as an OhYeah or PowerCrunch protein bar and 2 will give me a nice sense of fullness and cost ALOT less for me to make then a box of the afore mentioned costs to order on-line...I use them for an "in a rush, running late" substitute for my morning protein drink, on weekends when I forget about eating cause I'm wrapped in other stuff or to give me a little something sweet with good protein on late nights home from the gym and I don't want a heavy meal... Do agree there are better choices out there, don't agree with the "these are the devil" attitute, do agree they are not for anyone still trying to lose...For myself - in maintenance for over 18 months and still holding well, with a little monthly fluctation, for me they work out fine... Just one more opinion in the mix...Alesia

I do make protein balls also. I just figured out to make with Splenda, 1/2 the peanut butter and use either "almost butter" from Trader Joes or the powder PB for the other half. Sometimes have to add a little extra water to make sticky. I keep in the fridge for my "little snack". Keeps me from eating other things when I need something good. Sara
