Low blood sugar after surgery

You might need to increase your protein intake, and regular food (cottage cheese, slices of GOOD deli meats, pb&apple slices, sf/nf yoghurt) is probably best because your body gets more than just protein, it gets the other nutrients that are in the food.   But if protein shakes work for you, DO THEM!!  This new lifestyle is all about what is good for us as individuals!  I recommend the Syntrax Nectar proteins because you can mix them with water, which cuts the overall caloric intake.  I especially like the Lemon Iced Tea flavor, because it tastes like a refreshing glass of iced tea, yet has the extra protein!  Win-Win!  Other good flavors have been the Carribbean Cooler (Pina Colada flavor) and the orange flavored one (can't recall the name!). I have a terrible problem with carbs of any kind, even the low-glycemic indexed ones such as whole-grain bread, etc., any amount of intake makes me want more, just because of the metabolic disorder which caused my Type II diabetes.  Veggies don't seem to have that "craving" effect on me, but boy do I have to battle it when I eat white foods such as bread, pasta, rice, or potatoes. Good luck!

You may need to adjust meds? I was on an insulin pump for 5 years pre-op, after my gastric bypass, about 4 months after surgery, I had 2 seizures from low blood sugar(blood sugar was 20) My doc took me off completely off of insulin and onto oral meds. The meds needed to get adjusted a few times, but my blood sugar is good and very stable. I recently went off of my am tablet, now I take once daily actoplus met 15/850mg. That's a far cry from 150 units of insulin a day!!! Talk with your doc!!!

I've had some issues and they do seem related to my eating. When I eat every 3-4 hours and keep my simple carbs in check, I am fine. If I go too long without eating or eat a LARGE amount of simple carbs I will crash. When I crash I get shaky, disoriented and sweaty. I need sugar quick and protein to keep it from coming back in 30 minutes. I agree that for me it is the reason I had surgery. I have to eat well or I have a very negative physical reaction. Don't play with it too much, very low blood sugar can be dangerous.
