Can you tolerate more now?

I'm sort of surprised that I can't tolerate as much sugar and carbs as I could 6 months after surgery (I'm 14 months now). If I go one bite over 4 grams of sugar (like what's in a Kashi bar), I get sick as a dog. I became lactose intolerant after about 6 months, and that hasn't improved either. Do you think it ever will? I look at it this way - it's really things I shouldn't eat that make me sick, so it's really OK. But dang, I'm getting a little limited. Even a little potato make me a little queasy. Did anybody else experience this?

Yes, a lot of things make me queasy now....eggs yuck...also anything over 4grams sugar or 5 grams fat and I get the queasy, sweety, hot thing going on.  But I take it as my pouch (I named her Ethel) doing what she was created to do..keep me in line.  I can only take 2-3 bites of potato.  Maybe 1-2 bites of rice.  I can eat 3-4 bites baked sweet potato with Smart Balance margarine and cinnamon on it. Hope you figure out the yuckies and can avoid them.

It is His love and grace that saved and sustains me.
In Christ's love,

I was beginning to wonder if something was wrong with me. I thought most people could eat more as time went on, not less! I agree with you though - it is a good way to keep in line. From my past experience, it's not always best to count on my willpower to keep me from gaining back.

Nope, I don't really dump. Sometimes I wish I did b/c it would be like a little insurance policy to keep me on the right track, LOL!!! I'm sure it does limit what you can eat tho b/c 4gms of sugar isn't really very much at all. I wonder if it will back off the further out that you get???

Lactose intolerance is just an inconvenience, such as milk being in foods. So, when we ask, does it have milk, they THINK we said, "does i have fat?" and they mean yeah, it's skim. the lower the fat, the higher the sugar.

I can tolerate more sugar, hence my 3 regains. Very simple. Eat sugar, gain wt.

I'm 3 yrs. post-op and I am still lactose intolerant.  The food that affects me the worst is ice cream.  I consider this a blessing since I shouldn't eat it anyway.  I can drink milk in very small amounts.  Whenever I crave cereal (Cheerios are my favorite), I put just enough milk on it to cover the cereal and that's it.  I don't drink what is left over.  I just pour it down the drain.  Fortunately, I can eat cheese and lowfat yogurt.  So I still get plenty of proteins and calcium.  I don't think my lactose intolerance will ever go away but that's alright with me.   My biggest challenge is sugar.  I can tolerate it in small amounts now if I eat it slowly.  So I have to be very careful.

I'm one of those "weirdo's" who tolerated pretty much everything from the get-go once I got past 3-4 months post-op.  So I don't know if I can relate exactly, but I do notice that I'll have a "delayed reaction" to certain super-concentrated things the morning after I have them (ex: a fruit sorbet - things might be a little fast and loose the next morning, but nothing quite approaching a dumping episode).  That is a little "new" for me, but it's a rare thing.  So I don't think you're crazy :) I think the small intestine does re-adapt to be a little different once we're healed and out a bit farther.  But I don't think it means that you're necessarily "stuck" with the side effects - things will continue to adapt and re-adapt as more time goes on.

Be thankful that u can't tolerate any of those foods. I am almost 2 yrs out and to date have not cheated once in trying potatoes or sweet stuff like deserts, my main big fear is actually not dumping and being able to tolerate it, so I have decided not to find out. Isn't it sad how our sick minds work? The only sugar I have is the natural stuff in fruits, or a little of the added sugars in protein bars and yogurts etc. But normally nothing over 7gr. Keep up the good work and don't even try to experiment, it's not worth it. Use this pouch as your tool for life and you will be successful. Take care

Hope you don't mind me posting here, but I just wanted to ask which Kashi bar only has 4 grams of sugar?  I loved Kashi products pre-op but all of the bars I have found made by Kashi have 8 - 32 grams of sugar! And sorry you are feeling this way.  I am not that far out yet, but have had up to 12 grams of sugar without ill effect.
