Anyone Remember Me?

Hi---Tonight I googled myself, and found an entry from Elle Felts from 2005, looking for "lost" members, including me.  I am a 2002 grad, struggling lately with a big weight gain.  I've had a consultation with my surgeon who suggests that a revision might be right for me, but I need a 6 month doctor-supervised diet attempt to get my insurance to pay for it.  I'm going to go that route, but deep down, feel that it's my personal failure to have worked my program properly.  I am still thrilled that I did WLS--even with the 50 pounds I've put back, I am still down 115 from my starting place, and I hope I'll never go back there again; but I sure wish I could find my way home.  Perhaps this is a start?   Merry Christmas to all who lurk here; and may we all have a healthy New Year!

Hi!  I also have been lurking.  Switched jobs, not on line at work and have been busy getting ready for Christmas in the evenings.  But yes I need to come to this sight to keep up with other wls grads.  Yeas that weight gain has got me too.  Its the not working out that is getting to me not to mention all the Christmas goodies.  We have to band together and work on the future we have learned a lot and need to focus on the good health that we have and work at keep it.    So yes this is a start, keep coming here and we will help each other.  Merry Christmas!  Remeber the reason for the season.  Cheers Sheila

I'm glad you're back before it got as bad as before your surgery. You did really well not waiting. This is a good start, indeed.  Carla posts an Accountability message each day so we can list all the things we ate and the totals for the day. I keep track of mine on fitday.com and Carla's cheering me on. I'm hoping by doing that I'll learn to keep my ship on course, as we say around here. Maybe it could help you too! You're completely welcome to post with the rest of us, of course...Good luck on your journey. We're all in this boat together! Merry Christmas to you also.
Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

I am 2.5 years postop RnY. I have gained over 40 pounds in the last year. I am going to have a revision to a DS. Wish I had that done to begin with, but no one told me about it. I wish people were more vocal back then about how great the DS is. The RnY failed me and I want to do it right this time. I wish you luck in whatever you decide to do.

That's interesting that you are having a revision.  I was just wondering yesterday if that was possible.  What do you see are the benefits of the DS over RNY?

I will give you a brief synopsis of why the DS is better, but then I would like you to go to the DS forum here on OH and read what all the posters have to say about it. It has been proven that with the DS you get a better weight los and sustain it a lot longer. There is more malabsorption for sure, but that is what keeps the weight off better. You would have to take vitamin supplements for life and a bit more than with the RnY. You are able to take NSAIDS, Aleve or Motrin, whatever for arthritis or whatever. A big plus (and if you hated dieting with the RnY) with the DS you can eat more normally and more food. You are not limited to small quantities. Depending on your bowel habits, you may be able to eat carbs and sweets to an extent and not gain weight. Now true, everyone can't do that, but a good many do. The gas issue (if you have heard of it) is usually minimal. Once you find the food culprit for the gas, just eliminate it from your diet or eat that product when you are home and not out in public. A lot of people cannot eat refined sugar or white flour products either, but whole wheat products may be just fine for you. It is trial and error. Also, there are products on the market to quell the gas and poop issues. There is something called probiotics which helps minimize the BM. There is Devrom, which can be ordered online, to help with the smell if it is irritating you or family members. Flagyl, an antibiotic works well for that excessive gas, smell, and poop you may have. Please come to the DS forum and ask questions there. Many who are more pro at this can respond with their story. There is also another website called duodenalswitch.com, which has loads of info for you. Best to you.

I just stumbled onto your post and thought maybe you might want to try the 5 day pouch reset before you go for a revision. I did it and it resets your new stomach to the sensitivity it had immediately after surgery. It also stops all cravings,,you cant eat much again, and you regain the ability to dump on the wrong stuff. At least I did,,plus you will lose a few pounds in the process. Just go to the main forum and look, there are lots of posts about it, and several of us are going to do it immediately after the holidays. I  am starting it tomorrow. Just a thought... Blessings betsy

Hey, thanks for the good wishes, everyone.  It's good to know that I'm not forgotten, even by those who never knew me. I don't know much about the 5 day pouch thing; but I'll have a look for sure.  At this rate, anything I can do will be a good place to start.   Hope everyone had a great Christmas and has a Happy New Year!
